Spot and Stalk Bowhunting in Africa

Have any of you bowhunted in Africa by only spot and stalk? This is my favorite type of bowhunting and would love to try for a sable or kudu this way. Has anyone here hunted these two animals this way?

I walk and stalked my kudu ,and spent five days of a ten day hunt walking and stalking a bueatifull old sable ,that was too wise , for me .
two weeks later some bloke walked him up on the second day of his bowhunt ,
thems the breaks .....

Many hunters do and have a great time.

I asked this as it seems that most bowhunters go to Africa and sit in blinds. I do not really want to hunt in Africa this way. I really enjoy spot and stalk mulies in western ND and think that I would enjoy this style of hunting in Africa as well.

you will enjoy it immensely
on our first trip we went to limpoppo (dries visser safaris) near thabazimbi.
we were there in first week of may 2010, there was leaves on all the trees , grass up to your knees ,and water everwhere , even some of the ground blinds were half full of water .
there was blinds all over the place , which was handy stalking from dawn till lunch then we would sit in a blind for a couple of hours( some mornings and afternoons ,it was cool siting in the blinds aswell .) , then mid afternoon we would stalk off again till it was to dark to see , then radio the tracker and get picked up .one evening we got stalked by a brown hyena , that legged it outa there once we seen it stalking up behind us.(everyday we seen and heard things that we wouldn't of ,just blind hunting , on the same token we would've missed some great photo/ hunting opportunities by being out getting busted three to six times a day too)
if l was going to plan a walk em type hunt with my bow again id definitely do it up north again , at that time of the year .
ive seen dries visser dvds in the months of july through to November , and the place is barren with little cover and no foliage , all the animals seem a whole lot more relient on the feed lots and water holes .
if l was going to do it later in the winter months id go anywhere in south Africa to try .
don't know what the east cape is like in the autumn but was there in july last year , and walking them up in the late afternnons around roy wormalds property (chikwero) was bloody hard ,with little to no cover around the creek beds at the back of the houses.
stalking around the Limpopo bush in may , was the best hunting ive ever done ,the sites and the smells along with the abundance of game were easy worth all the bloody prickles from the trees .
if that what you want , dive right on in , youll not regret it .

I used a rifle but could have taken a nice Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Steenbuck, Diker and more with a bow had I been hunting with on all spot and stalk.

Spot and stalk is definitely possible, especially on bowhunting only concessions. If you can shoot your bow well up to 60 yards you can basically spot and stalk anything over here.

just give yourself a realistic amount of hunting days

South Africa is the ultimate destination for spot & stalk.... That's my favorite way to hunt and basically, that's the only way I choose to hunt anymore. Most clients, and especially first-time guests, come to Africa with the mindset that they are doing a "once in a lifetime" hunt and they want to acquire as many trophies on their list as possible. For that reason, we recommend hunting the driest months out of hides at waterholes so as to provide the most shot opportunities at the most different species. That said, we are happy to accommodate any bow hunting guest to hunt in the manner they choose. We love to spot & stalk with our guests, and we encourage it whenever the conditions and the situation dictates it.

As others have pointed out, it can be very challenging and you need to understand that your opportunities will be more limited than if you spent the majority of your hunting time in a hide or in a stand.

It defenately add to your hunting experiance!! You might not fling as many arrows as when sitting in a blind, but if you down that animal by stalking it with a bow.... That feeling is just terrific!!
It is very doable in SA and in the areas we hunt most of the shots are from 30-80m For rifle hunting. So with some patience you will get close to that big sable bull and the grey ghost will maybe give tou that 1 or 2 seconds more to make the shot!!!

no blinds so you would have to do walk and stalk for sable

I spent 5 or 6 days doing walk and stalk in the EC and took a great old hartebeest bull and a warthog, hunting was tough and conditions were really good only one day.

After doing a few sun up to sun down sits in the blind I was more than ready for the lower odds of stalking, anything to move around. On my next trip I will likely try and do fifty percent of my hunting by stalking. Warbird I also bow hunt North and South Dakota, you will love the target rich environment.
