Bakkie hunting

I agree Ses, Bakkies are just tools to cover ground. Everyone talks about walking their entire hunt and most guys could not last a day, never mind 7.

I sure did not walk all the way from Durban to get to the base of this mountain. If you want to walk more, get out and walk more. I think the OP has his plan and he can work it on his net hunt. Just don't complain when the trophy count is lower.

I could walk all day every day in steep scrambly terrain and I would accept a smaller bag and smaller trophies as well. For me the less effort I have to put in, the bigger the critters need to be to pull the trigger. A little sweat on the brow and some sore muscles are the icing on the cake of a good day afield and a memory that will not fade regardless of what is in the salt.

If you want to walk all day every day, in my experience all you have to do is tell your PH, and you're off. If you're really up for it, challenge your PH and trackers to see who cries uncle first!

It's the client's hunt, and if the PH won't go along without a very good reason (like safety), then time for a new PH. But the client does need to speak up.

It is up to you to say what you want.

Derek, that would be the exclusion from "most people" .

Create the hunt you want.

Nice to see this old thread coming to life again.
It is not easy for a first timer to speak up.
I guess the PH has a responsability to ask and listen to his or her client too.
I remember trying to tell him how we hunt in the north of Sweden (Only walking. The use of cars during hunting is forbidden) but the reply was that this is the way we do it. And that is OK. I accepted it.
When I finally spoke up he sent me with one of the trackers.
I had a great time anyway and the amazing experience is forever in my memory.
But my point is to the PH.s. Talk to your unexeperienced clients and listen to them.

You have very little time and need to really begin to express this interest well before the hunt starts and again with the PH in the first conversation you have.

It is hard to speak up, but you are paying for this (YOUR) adventure. Remember that.

But is the use of bakkies during hunting a result of filling the trophybag as quick and with as many animals as possible ?
Does anyone return from Africa with just one er even without a trophy ?

...Derek, that would be the exclusion from "most people" ...

Agreed, but I sure got a few likes real quick so I am not alone on this one by any means.

Yes, I think so! e.g It doesn't makes sense to have a 5 day hunt with 12 animals, but there are hunts like that - depending on the time of year perhaps...Normally Winter harvest are better than Summer harvesting.

Yes, some has!

I thought my Zimbabwe hunt may be a once in a lifetime thing and booked with a PH that hunted the way I wanted to hunt, tracking and walking. I was quite prepared to come home empty handed even though it didn't work out that way. With the things I experienced I would not have been disappointed if things had have turned out that way.

You certainly are not alone. Take a picture of the group on top of the mountain and tell me if you need some more room to fit them all in the picture! :ROFLMAO:

I left Namibia on my first hunt without a Kudu. I also went home on another excursion without a spotted cat. (not for lack of seeing them on Camera)

Forgot about that calling thing. hmmmm!:E Shifty:

With you Diamondhitch. Serval & Caracal are tops on my list for this year. They just seem to go well with Lioness :) Calling and some night hunting. No dogs. I've got 7 of 24 days set aside to try to make it happen. Fingers crossed.

I hope you have better luck than I have. Right place wrong time. Ill get em next time and savor my eventual triumph ;)

Personally I hate horses, they do come in quite handy for Leopard bait though, especially if you consider that you are saving fuel by riding it to the bait tree... :) :) :) ;) ;)

My best always

Dang! Just when I thought I liked you Jaco!
