AH MEMBER HUNT - HOST OUTFITTER?

Ok guys I'm willing to be the first to say yes I will go on AH outfitter sponsored safari, I would like to hunt with KMG
Safaris in May of 2016, So who's with me? Marius said he could go up to six hunters, I hunted with him in May of 2014 had the time of my life.
Marius are you still up to the task of dragging me around the Eastern Cape again? Kurt

Appreciate the thought Kurt.
Got to put a collar on you. :)

J will be trying to make sure this is done "properly" as an AH. I am trying to gather information so we can share what we all think would be right!

Sorry Brickburn but I have been wanting to go back since I left!

I would love to join in but don't think May 2016 will work as we are going to South America in June '16. So I might just have to miss the inaugural year of the Annual AH group hunt!?

Maybe I can be on the standby list just in case? And if a group were to go earlier like early March or mid April (after Easter) ... Is it far to miserable in February? Got AC in the rooms? Or late at the end of the season, November or early Dec.

I do realize the dates cannot be flexible, so like I said, I'll be on standby just in case. However the group might want to consider if saving money is a desire, going when it is not prime time.

How about some input on whether there are cost saving available from outfitters based on time of year? And maybe just the ability to handle a larger group?

On the other hand if the hunting is too difficult, that could put a damper on things......

Bob,
Around mid April should be fine regarding the weather and hunting conditions. I'm willing to offer the AH group discount to any slot of the year. Even during the prime time. Saying all this, this all still depends on whether the group hunt happens at our venue, and this is up to Jerome and Brickburn. We will also like to offer our venue to this group hunt as a yearly event. So, we've thrown our name into the hat. The rest is up to the bosses over at AH headquarters.

Thanks for "stepping up to the plate" Marius! Looking forward to seeing how all of this plays out. I really think this will get some folks over the big pond that might have been too hesitant otherwise.

Thank you. I think this part in your quote, plays a huge part behind the whole idea.

I also would be interested in a first time African hunt in the summer to fall time frame of 2016. I would be after a limited number of animals, but don't believe that would interfere with other hunters that may be after a large number of species. Seven days would be plenty for me.

It is great to see the interest in this inaugural event.

My wife has suggested a that maybe we should pay for a hunt and take my 2 sons over. This could be a way to do that and have some fun at a little more reasonable cost. 1 son has been to the East Cape and the other has never made it to Africa. The one who has not gone is very interested in a Gemsbuck. Perhaps if there is a offering from Namibia..... Different area for one and prime gemsbuck country for the other. I suspect that I could hunt 2X1 alternating between the boys and be rather happy. So I am definitely interested in seeing how this progresses. I am a definite maybe!!! Bruce

How are you posting and fishing for steelies at the same time?

They jumped the water on the NF from 1400 to 9800 CFS. The main river is "blown out" although its coming down some. Lots of people w/ the 3 day weekend and very few places where there is a good chance of catching fish. We postponed it for a bit. May leave as early as tomorrow....... Bruce

Fish will be biting the rocks to try and hang on

By the looks of it more then one place maybe needed with the amount of guys saying they would like to do a hunt like this.

If I don't get to do the ah group hunt I am going to let guys know when I am going again and see who may want to go with. May just be able to help someone new get over there with out all the worries.

We can host more than one hunt a year. Why limit it to one? It's about camaraderie among AH members, putting faces behind the names, having a good time and creating opportunities to first time African hunters to travel with guys who have experience in African hunting travel.

I hear you marius and more then one sure could be done. I guess we must just wait to see what Jerome wants to do. After my hunt last year with the 5 of us I will always try and get some guys to go with me be it from the site or just friends I have who hunt. Having a group made our hunt much more fun last year.

Just a few random thoughts

1.) personally, I don't hunt with just anyone anymore.....several years back I hooked up with a guy that I didn't know to do some duck hunting; he had never hunted the area before, and you needed a minimum of two people to hunt the more "successful" areas, so we partnered up for the day. Long story short, I am now partially deaf in my right ear from a shotgun blast that was fired about 6" above my head, at a duck coming in from my immediate left. I now no longer hunt with anyone I don't know unless I get to see how they act on a skeet/trap/rifle range first.
2.) Why just one hunt, or one outfitter? I have to put in for dates well over a year in advance (for my last trip, it was close to two years). Getting time off for me can be a real pain, esp. if I am limited to a small window of dates (covering our time off is difficult in my line of work). If some folks want to go in May, and others in July or August, why not two trips or two different outfitters. I guess that also depends on what species everyone wants to hunt......some species (black wildebeest, springbok, etc) aren't available everywhere, and others might not have the numbers for a group hunt, i.e. if everyone wants a bushbuck, but they are scarce in an area, then it might not be prudent to hunt that area.
3.) Without trying to complicate things, maybe people from the same general areas in the states could get together....might make meeting ahead of time a little easier; might make it easier to get together afterwards for hunts back in the states as well. Might be able to get some discounts on air fare as well if everyone is flying out of the same airport(s) on the same airline(s).
4.) I have to agree with whomever it was that stated they didn't what to hunt with some overly competitive A-hole!!! This could potentially ruin it for someone, esp. a first timer to Africa. I think that all tape measures should be confiscated at the beginning of the day and not returned until well after dinner!:E Happy:

-as to the question as to what was the most intimidating part of the trip the first time going to Africa: to this, I would have to say reading negative comments on websites such as this one about air travel, gun issues, poor outfitters, poor taxidermists, poor dip/pack, etc., etc. I would read these and thing "Geez, something is going to go wrong with my hunt, and it's going to be BAD and COSTLY!!!!" I almost cancelled a couple of times after reading some of these threads, thinking to cut my losses..............in the end, I'm glad I didn't, because I had a GREAT time and nothing happened (I was waiting for the shoe to drop)......I guess I got nervous waiting, because their were NO glitches, which is unheard of in my case.

Anyway..............like I said, just a few random thoughts.

Regarding your numbered items:

1) Having hunted with an unsafe hunter, I completely understand. 1x1 hunts should preclude this potential problem.

2) Excellent point, this shouldn't have to be a 1 outfitter once a year deal.

3) Might be a bit difficult. But there's getting to be lots of us that meet at DSC and SCI every year. I can't think of a better opportunity for this sort of thing to happen.

4) That would've been me the competitive moron and I completely concur with the tape measure being taken away. Only I would give it back at departure time.
