Big Bore Addiction Group

Guess I should introduce myself instead of lurking in the shadows. My big bore addiction was started and fueled by my grandfather. Shooting his Winchester model 70 in 458 began a walk down a long and dark path of addiction to recoil. After shooting his I was forced to wait many years but have since added a Winchester Model 70 416 to my own personal collection. After shooting it for the last three years I have now been thinking it needs a friend such as a 458 Lott to keep it company....

welcome to the forum and welcome to the big bore addiction thread!

if you have a 416 RM then the 458 Lott is an excellent next step! if you aren't a hand loader yet, I recommend you pick it up. hand loading really brings out the joy in these heavy hitters.

OUCH! I have a mental image of a deflated balloon  with a big R on it. ;)
Matt and Bob, I couldn't agree more. Quality Assurance/Quality Control is a problem at most gun companies today. But, from the point of view of a manufacturing guy, I believe the heart of the problem is in the PHILOSOPHY and CULTURE of the companies not so much QC/QA specifically.
Quality CANNOT be "inspected" in after the parts have been made. Integrated manufacturing and quality assurance practices are essential. If you're catching the out of tolerance parts after they've been made you are forcing yourself to decide between throwing them in the scrap bin or sacrificing product quality. Neither is a good or sustainable option.
The problem is a PROCESS problem, and a CULTURE problem. A process that always yields the desired result, every time, should be the only acceptable answer.
Develop the best process for a given component or operation. Document that process so that each time it is performed it is performed the same way, regardless of who's doing it. Create the quality process and the manufacturing process in tandem and make sure they work together in harmony.
The QA department is not the bad guy, but all too often they are forced into the role of being the "Quality Police". QA should be regarded as manufacturing's best friend. And they will be if the culture fosters and enables it. Too often they are just the unfortunate ones that end up detecting an error when its too late and delivering the bad news.
YOU CAN'T INSPECT IN QUALITY! It must be manufactured in.
Not intended to be a rant, but after 30 years in manufacturing I've seen very, very few companies that do this well. When done well profitability will increase. Good processes pay for the effort it took to develop them.
Once again, just my 2 bits :D
Well stated sir!

IdaRam,
If these guys would follow what y'all do at TS as far as quality goes this conversation wouldn't be happening. I'm sure that something slips through the cracks there once in a while but I bet dissatisfied customers are not the norm for you guys. You build a fine American product that flat ass works!
I told the boys up at MRC that word of mouth is certain disaster in this market share, hope they heed my warning. I received a great quality rifle from them, Matt got hosed! 50% ain't stellar performance. I am going to order another rifle from them soon in a caliber more suited for Plains game, I'm sure Matt would only use the lumber for firewood if he was really cold! Lol.
Any who, I think we are beating a dead horse thinking corporate America will ever pull their heads out of their asses and get back to what made this such a great country, quality, hard work and a truck load of pride.

I've been reloading for many years. I had already picked up the dies and reloading supplies before the rifle showed up. :ROFLMAO: About time to reload some more in fact.

Addict in progress :( (40 years )
.22Mag --> -22mag + 270W --> +35Wh & 270W--> -35Wh - 270W + 338WM --> +375H&H & 338WM
--> -338WM +458WM & 375H&H --> -458WM + 416RM & 375H&H --> -375H&H + 9.3x62 + 45-70 & 416RM
but ...
next step ? +458Lott ... hum.. for instance 9.3x62 efficiency, 45-70 for the fun, 416RM efficiency, 458Lott for the fun ... in a first time ..

Many thanks @Bullthrower338 ! After this week that kind of compliment is much appreciated! Currently replacing a $30,000 spindle in a 2 year old horizontal CNC.

if you have a 458 WM, you can simply have it converted to 458 Lott by a proper big bore gun smith. the 458 Lott will give you a great deal more wiggle room when it comes to hand loading. something else to consider if you already have a 458 WM, is looking at a 505 Gibbs. moving from the 458 WM to the 505 Gibbs is like moving from a 450 NE to a 500 NE, its a noticable step but nothing too huge in my opinion.

I'm Rob and my addiction started with a .458 Win Mag. It has since run the gamut from .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .45-70. I've got such a bad case of it, It's even branched into a .454 Casull, as well as .475 & .500 Linebaugh revolvers.

Hi Rob! And welcome!

You're in the right place. :)

Thanks!

I forgot to mention the .375JDJ and .45-70 Contenders.

MS Hitman, welcome to the forum and to the big bore addiction thread!

You all need to post more pictures (or videos)! i want to see more guns, cartridges, and targets with big holes in them. this thread isnt here to help people with their addiction, its here to further the addiction.

What's the stronger recoil 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery ?

if your a hand loader then both are about the same. if you just buy factory ammunition then the 500 Jeffery will have more recoil as its typically loaded hotter.

common factory loads for the 500 Jeffery VS the 505 Gibbs:

Gibbs
-600gr bullet at 2100fps
-525gr bullet at 2300fps

Jeffery
-570gr bullet at 2300fps
-535gr bullet at 2400fps

Alright. I hold you scalleywags responsible for the fact that I am ordering a new CZ 550 375 h&h from the local gun shop. There out of stock but I put a deposit down and get the first one soon as they become available. It has to be y'all's fault because it couldnt have anything to do with my lack of self control. Shhhhh the wife doesn't know. I'm just gunna smuggle it in to my gun safe when she's not looking. Super excited about it. I've read a lot on here about the CZ's needing a few things done to them after you get them. Any advice in this category would be appreciated.

They never know... Not at first....

Matt will be along shortly to explain why you need a .458 Lott as the next logical step.

Wait and see what you get and then deal with it then. I had feeding issues and sent it back to CZ and they took care of it. They said it would be eight weeks, and it was, but it worked great when I got it back.

Congrats in advance!!!

:A Hi Five:
We're all proud of you for not letting your self control get in the way of the need for instant gratification!
Well done! :A Thumbs Up:

Awesome. In big bores this will make a 375,416,45-70 that I have. I almost bought a 458 win but I've really always wanted a 375 plus it goes along with the leopard hunt, my wife doesn't know about either, that I'm going to book after I get back from my lion and buff hunt in June. So to me it made perfect since to go ahead and get the rifle. Ya know cause at that point I'm committed to having to book a leopard hunt.
