AH MEMBER HUNT - HOST OUTFITTER?

I would be glad to put on an AH dove hunt in Texas I'd thow in some fishing for good measure:)

Where in Texas do you conduct the dove hunts. For many years I drove from Little Rock Ar. to Dallas, to San Antonio to see relatives, so I am a little familiar with that area but have never hunted there.

Im in Turkey Tx. Its about an hour and 45 min se of Amarillo

I could do 8 maybe 10 people. With this many people I'd do it for a very reduced rate

Very good, I'll do some map recon to locate you. Been through Amarillo a couple of time headed to the Flat Tops Wilderness in Colorado, but that was about 20 years ago.

I had a group opening day this last year. They killed 134 birds in about four hours.

I'd be real interested in a Namibia group hunt

Agree with Marius, six will keep it personal.

I've been trying to go over in my mind what the benefits might be to a newbie to join this adventure.

What are the concerns or fears that are overcome by this type of arrangement?

If it ends up being in SA, I would love to tag along and help out where I can!(y)

For a noob, I think a benefit would be ease of communicating with others from the group beforehand. I tried to get my friends to join in my first hunt, but no one could. With my military background I wasn't too concerned about going alone, but I'm teeming with confidence.
I think it would have been a benefit to have another friendly face for the traveling part. Also, to have someone to give you a little confidence boost to take a shot. I chose to hold on a couple of opportunities because I wasn't sure of myself. Firing at targets I would have never hesitated, but toward a real animal I acted differently. That may be a result of never having hunted before. I did, however, appreciate that Patrick wasn't pushy even one time in those situations.

Thanks. It never hurts to have extra hands.

What are the concerns or fears that are overcome by this type of arrangement?

1. Hunt Price - potential volume discount here

2. Trave Companions - if someone is new to this and travels with someone not new, there's a level of confidence for the new guy there that he has someone to talk to. Personally, I'm wasn't all that concerned having traveled abroad before I ever went to RSA when I went, but not all have.

3. Along the lines of number 2, having someone along who knows how this all works provides an example for the newbie to follow. I like to when I'm in a foreign country to follow the "When in Rome..." line of thinking. But no matter how sensitive you may be to not bringing your home country's customs into another, if you don't know the customs of where you're going, it's a bit of a challenge to fit in.

4. While I and others have spoken of being careful about hunting with people you don't know, the flip side of that is the newbie may find someone they really click with and thus discover a future hunting buddy whether it be in Africa or elsewhere.

I think a big benefit to new guys would be just getting there and through the airport with someone who has done it before. So many make it out to be so hard and have scared a few guys into thinking it is much harder then it really is.

Guys would also gain on getting a better deal with the number of guys hunting in the group. Might make it they can take more game or other animals they thought were out of there price range.

In general I think it would just make the whole trip easier on the mind with someone who has been there and done that in africa. Would make it to wear they can just think about the fun of hunting.

For me it would just be so fun to see guys who have never been there. You can tell people all you want but till they see it for the first time with there own eyes its more then you can explain to anyone.

Do any of you guys that have hunted in a foreign country before recall what it was that caused you the most anxiety or trepidation before the trip?

For myself it was about the traveling and must people I talk with it is what worries them also. people think getting through jo-berg with a rifle is the end of the world. Or even more that it is so dangerous in the airport at jo-berg.

I have found it to be no harder then any airport here in the states. I have done all my own gun paperwork and that was even traveling with a 11 year old the first time. Things may not go as fast as guys like it to but if you don't act like a better then them US client it really is not that hard. Common sense will get you through must anything guys try and make harder then it is.

The other comment I have been ask is how do you know the guy will be there to pick you up. I think going to a sponsor who guys know would help take that fear away also.

That comment about them being at the airport to pick you up struck home. Both trips to Kyrgyzstan that was in the back of my mind.
A new to africa hunter may of researched travel with a rifle, but still worries about forgetting something. Non native tongue authorities can scare timid individuals. Most people cringe at the thought of jail or a fine for unknowingly doing something wrong in a foreign country. Someone with them that knows the ropes can provide a great deal of comfort. Bruce

Without a doubt, travelling with firearms. I did ridiculous amounts of research both on transiting other countries as well as entry to SA.

Second was just hoping that the outfitter actually showed up and took me hunting!!! LOL I did crazy amounts of research beforehand but lets face it if crooks looked and acted like crooks they would starve to death. :D

Both worries were legitimate but easily resolved with a few trips under the belt, but the first time...

I'd concur with the traveling with rifles part. I now only take a few sets of clothes and my electronics in carry on to avoid the lost luggage scenario. But obviously this is not possible with the rifles.

A thread drift moment. My last trip involved Lufthansa / SAA airlines. At the very least Lufthansa required advanced notice that I would be traveling with firearms and the info on those. This information is made available on your "file" if you will. Both in Frankfurt on the way out and Munich on the way back home, I checked with the agents at the gate prior to boarding to see if those checked bags were on board. On the way out, the SAA lady in Frankfurt almost began to chuckle when she heard I had arrived like 12 hours earlier. However at the same time she was looking me up on her computer. She realized quickly that my concern was more than just if I would have clean underwear once I got to Africa. So whether or not you end up on a flight that requires you to pre-notify of the firearms or not, if you have stops in between here and there, it's not beyond the gate agents ability to look this up which in turn alleviates some of this anxiety.

Agreed, I do this on every leg of every flight and it works well for me, at least I have a false sense of security that way! (y)
