TCI (Zimbabwe) at DSC

They had a waterbuck done there and I thought it was the best one. I did not get a picture though

Sable looks nice but that Buffalo is a mess I don't fell buffalo could be done in any good way.

They had a waterbuck that I thought was their best. Not that i'm an expert!!!!Don't know why I didn't take a pic of it. Got distracted I guess.

Buff is kinda funky.... Like some impressionist piece I guess?

I'm not a taxidermist but I made a mule deer in Wyoming look just like that on Interstate 90 once with a Dodge pick up! Lol. Just kidding I thought they were really cool, except the Buff, he looked more like a melted buffalo candle only weirder than actually owning a buffalo sized candle.

The thing I admire most is the effort and the ingenuity/innovativeness. Certainly not for everyone, and every piece is not going to come out "perfect" (whatever that is).... But I think it is really cool that they are trying.

It takes ambition, drive and guts to go outside the box and put yourself on the line with new and different ideas... But this is where the seeds of innovation sprout.

So this stuff is really not to my taste. But I have a great admiration for the effort and for those who stretched their imaginations to create it!

My youngest son saw these and said it would be cool way to decorate a baby's nursery. I asked him if he needed to tell me about something. He said no but its always good to have a plan.:E Crazy:

I grabbed this picture from TCI's facebook page showing the Waterbuck. The Kudu and Giraffe look pretty cool too. John

There again, most people I visited with were critical of the Kudu being split in half and only one horn displayed..... But the message I got at the shop was they are experimenting and just trying on different ideas. I think they welcome feedback.

I liked a lot of the artwork/paintings on various leather pieces. They have several talented artists doing these, each with their own twist on various themes.

Isn't it interesting how a business operating in such an unfriendly business environment and with so many challenges (being in Zimbabwe) .... Happens to rise up as a most innovative amongst their peers?

I was fascinated to hear that at one time Cuan had actually come to the USA to work on a wheat combining crew... Based less than 50 miles from my home. Small World!

And have to admire the work ethic.

My thoughts were what a cool idea on the kudu. Could you imagine having bookends of each half of the kudu set to either side of stacked stone fireplace or in an entry?

Now that would be unique! Are you going to be the first in the World to have a set?

Hmm. That is tempting. Off to New Zealand this year. I'm going to talk to Dennis about what we could do with the Tahr I plan to get. I have one Kudu. But, this gives me one more reason to go and hunt another one. Of course the negotiation with Ann will have to occur on placement of the new one. As well, I'm quite certain they would be subjected to the Christmas decorations. John

THE TAHR would be Extraordinary ! With all that mane hair and puffed out behind the head. I see it in my head now. Incredible !
The softness of some skin rolls thru the piece and the color of the collar around the head would be awesome. The tahr's head would be full not a 1/2 and more like the waterbuck but lower into the skin that covers the canvas. 3' by 4' give or take on approximate size.

I'll call you next week. I read Ann your message and she''s on board and has a spot picked out for the Tahr.

^^^

Can't wait to see this!!!!!

Good day to you all...
Thank you for all the wonderful comments on our latest work out of Zimbabwe.
We certainly had a lot of attention through our new 'Toiles' at the DSC and will hopefully get the same reaction in Las Vegas at SCI- please come and visit us at booth 4112 to see our latest work!

These 'toiles' are a form of art rather than a mount and it has taken us years of experimenting to get 100%...if you intend on getting one created by your own taxidermist here in the US I suggest you tread very carefully, we have had to cut and use many capes per animal to get each one right. It is not a simple matter of skinning a standard cape and turning it into a Toile, there are multiple incisions that need to be made on the animal in the field before one can produce a perfect toile without any stitch lines...

If any of you have questions regarding our work please visit our website or mail me.

happy hunting and see you in vegas
