Big Bore Addiction Group

Hey Matt know that feeling, I been re cleaning the arsenal to kill time, packing brass away. Cool pics, confirm that's 416 Rem?

Since we doing bullets here is a couple showing Barnes 450g up to recovery from the animal.

Got some cool 9.3 x 62 bullets from a mate but since they don't fall into big bore ..... Will have to find appropriate forum.

Fr8liner, I noticed a few interesting things about those pictures.

1. the used TSX bullet shows no sign of the bands. was this an old style X-bullet? if not you might want to measure the groove diameter of the rifle and compare it to the outside diameter of the bullet.

2. the used bullet seems much longer then the bullet pictured next to it. could just be the picture though.

I LOVE the 450 NE and applaud your choice in doubles!

Bebo - it's an over under Gebruder Merkel, gunmaker F. Gehri.

Matt - heck I hadn't noticed, I assumed it was a Barnes as these came with the rifle with reload data for Barnes 450g and that's why I restocked on them for future.

old style X bullets don't have the bands like the new TSX bullets. the older style X bullets had some reliability issues and caused more barrel fouling then needed. looks like the one pictured worked just fine though!

the used bullet does appear to have a longer base. have you weighed it?

Well, It has been a few months since my last visit to the Big Bore Addiction Support Group and I have truly fallen off the wagon. I have been saving up Cabela's points and gift cards for some time and they just started "burning a hole in my pocket" in the last 2 months. During that time I bought a Weatherby Safari Custom in .460 WBY (very nice wood and cool custom leather WBY case) and just recently as the DSC show I found a CZ 550 Safari Classics in .500 Jeffery that caught my eye. The gentlemen working the booth made me a great deal on it but I still wasn't sure so I went to the CZ booth to learn more about how they are made, etc in the Safari Classics shop. After learning more about the gun and cartridge, I decided to buy that one at Cabela's (they knocked $1300 off of the new price). Now I need to gather up some ammo for both (WOW expensive) and go touch off a few rounds in each. I really like my .416 Rigby and .500 NE double and they are not bad to shoot but I imagine the 460 WBY and 500 Jeffery will be like trying to ride a lightening bolt.

I will try to get some pics up before too long.

Hello Vette447,

In the event that you find the .500 Jeffery to have too much recoil, hopefully you do hand load and if so, try loading it down to .500 NE ballistics.

The factory loaded Jeffery is reportedly shooting its 535 gr bullet at about 2400 fps and this is too much recoil for me personally.

It is both a heavy recoil and a fast recoil.

But even with the heavier 570 gr bullet from the .500 NE cartridge fame, loaded into the Jeffery case at around 2100 fps, even I can stand to shoot it accurately for a few times but, I never shoot it from sitting at a bench, only from standing.

Also worth mentioning, I have been loading mine down to about 2000 fps with the 570 grainers to help tame recoil.

Loaded down like the above mentioned specifications, it is still a heavy recoil but slow, and that makes a huge difference to the shoulder.

Besides, if the .500 NE ballistics are not adequate, we all had better run for our lives.

I have the same brand/model that you now have and these are thankfully equipped with a mercury cylinder in the buttstock to help mitigate recoil.

Mine weighs about 11 pounds empty and yours probably does as well, this is a good weight for the .500 Jfry.

Although it generates quite a bit of recoil, (even loaded down as described), I can shoot it well from standing, over the sticks and I'm a recoil sissy.

As for your new .460 Wby, I have never fired one and I do not even know anyone who owns one so, perhaps Jaco Strauss or some of the others here have some ideas on this one.

I know that he has one and apparently has quite a bit of experience with it on African animals.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

the common load for the 500 Jeffery is a 570gr .510" bullet at 2300fps and the 460 WBY is a 500gr .458" bullet at 2600fps. you sir have just bought two of the most powerful sporting rifles in the world. the recoil on both these rifles pretty much sets the standard for "excessive". having said that, if you can handle the jarring recoil of these shoulder fired cannons then even Godzilla will fear you!

I have a CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery and love it. Kynoch ammo didin't chamber in mine. I reload using Jamison brass have had no issues reloading. Not sure where to get factory ammunition that will chamber since the 500 Jeffery has gone through several specification iterations over the years.

I was going to try the Norma loads that Midway and I think Cheaper Than Dirt has and see how they shoot/cycle for the .500 Jeffery.

ive had very good luck with Norma ammunition in many firearms. as far as ive seen they make better ammunition then Kynoch and they are less expensive.

my Norma 505 Gibbs ammunition looks great and is loaded with 600gr Woodleigh bullets which i prefer the the 525gr Woodleigh's that Kynoch uses. i havent had a chance to shoot either cartridges but they both chambered fine in my 505 Gibbs DGR.

vette447, wow is all I can say, I salute you. You are a true addict :)

Called my addiction. I need to buy something in a large caliber. I think of orginal Jeffery rifle.

someone needs to buy one of these (without the muzzle break) and let me try it! http://americanhuntingrifles.com/?page_id=37

I keep thinking I want one.... either the 600 OK or the 577 T-rex. either way I would load them down to around 2100fps but I think they would be awesome!

Just go ahead and get the .700 AHR, Matt. I know you hate brakes, but I'm sure they'd build you a rifle without one.

By the way, do you have good dental insurance? :E Crazy:

I would be first in line to try out the 700 AHR but id prefer the 600 OK if I was going to buy one. the 600 OK has better sectional density. the 577 T-rex has a better bullet selection though...

I really wish I had some way of trying these guns. :(

I wonder if AHR will be at the SCI show. (I just sent them an email)

I'd shoot it just because, but when they put a scout scope on a rifle so that it won't hit you in the face and kill you I get concerned!!! :A Banana Sad:

I would think if they were going to be at SCI it would be on the website, but you can always email and ask.
