Now that I have got my CZ on the way I am wanting to purchase a good Shooting/Safari type Vest. I'm hoping you fine Gentleman may be so kind as to point me in the right direction.

I wish to get one that is in a color suitable for Africa though I have never been and it maybe some time before I get to go. I would like to get one that has cartridge loops. As well as a padded shoulder. As these are the type I think of for a Safari vest.
Have been looking at the Boyt vest any one used these? Any other recommendations would also be highly welcome. As always thank you for the time.

On my trip I took a Tag Safari travel vest and was happy with it. It does not have a padded shoulder but worked well.

I found a used nice Columbia Vest on E-Bay that worked really well Cabellas has a 5-11 Vest that may also be worth a look

Note the perfect hunting vest. I always take two because I wear one daily. Tan would be an OK color as well but the green works a little better for capping varmints at night with a 375 H&H Magnum.

No, it doesn't have cartridge loops and why would you need them? Cartridges in the magazine or in a cartridge wallet on the belt work very well. You can also get a sleeve for your rifle stock to hold cartridges if you think an emergency reload might be necessary.

No, mine doesn't have padding. The clothing I've seen with shoulder padding would be pretty worthless for tameing recoil if that's what you're after. Also, are you REALLY going to shoot so much that you are going to wear through the shoulder area without some reinforcement. Of course, you could buy a vest and have a seamstress sew in 4 inches of foam or however much you think you may need.

Ok, I totally get the idea of a classic vest, and this may seem like an odd suggestion, but I now always hunt with my Cabelas turkey vest. It is seriously the most convient invention. If I do not plan to sit much I take the little cushion off. Decent colour, supportive in the back, useful organizational pockets at the front for range finder, maps, water bottle, first aid kit etc. The pocket at the back can easily hold layers of clothing. The cushion is equally useful in tree stands and rocky ground if you leave it attached. Anyway, just thought I would lob that out there 'cause I think it a waste to leave it in the closet except when looking for turkey.

Grumulkin, what did you bag there, the neighbor's cat?

The idea of having cartridge loops at chest height appears to date back to individual cartridge pouches (see Georgian/Cossack traditional costume) for the original muzzle-loading cartridge system, wherein you ripped off the top of the cartridge, removed the ball (later bullet), poured the powder down the barrel and then tamped the projectile on top.

If cartridge loops work for you, that's great, otherwise ... just something else to snag on the bushes and advertise to thieves that you might be carrying a firearm in your vehicle!

Best wishes for your search and I hope you get that hunt in.
