Spam has become a war every where! It costs a lot of money to keep it at the gate and still they can get by the safe guards. Jerome does real well to keep it is low as what we experience on this site.
Like you Greyfix I'm just going back to bed.
 
I used to run a popular website as part of my day job. The spammers are relentless, like a terminator. They'll try every trick in the book to get around things to stop them and the more popular the site the bigger the target. I imagine some of the admins are busy with the DSC show this week and the our regular spammer has decided to take advantage of that.

Listen, and understand. That terminator spammer is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead spammed.
 
If more of our AH forum members became a "SUPPORTER" on AH.

The additional moneys generated could be used to try and stay one step ahead of the active spammers.

Everyone need to do a small part to make the AH site a great location. We have strength in numbers.

For those complaining, if you were to look a the title and name of the member making the posting, it becomes very clear that you do not need to even enter the link...

So THINK before you CLICK to open a forum posting!

Mr. 16 (Gauge, lest someone misinterpretes... ;)) asked a very pertinent question, one that I asked myself too: how do spammers get registered as members?

That's a technical question, nothing to do with supporting the site or not... Does anyone have an idea of how this works? I don't really see spammers spending hours registering on various sites, with captcha and confirmation mails... So, how do they do it?

Sorry to have come into this conversation late. We are and have been being targeted by anti hunting groups for several years now. As BRICKBURN pointed out they are paying cheap laborers to manually join the site and trying to overwhelm it. If they are not trying to take it down using DDOS attacks they are trying to become such a source of irritation that they cause me to quit or you to stop wanting to visit.

They use one tactic and when we put in safeguards against it or they see that we are fighting it they move on to another tactic. They have been basically waging a war of attrition against us for years wanting to take the site down or ruin the experience you have or making it so costly and intensive to operate the site that we give up or let it go into spamming hell.

BRICKBURN and I try to get rid of spam as soon as it is posted to keep AH "clean" but as brushmore pointed out they are relentless! And we do sleep and have other things going on in our lives that we sometimes, although rarely, aren't monitoring the site. Upon sign up the site automatically checks the individual email and IP address against the database of StopForumSpam.com and Project Honey Pot to get rid of known spammers. The system has stopped over 1200 spammers from joining since we changed to the new platform last May but most of what we are experiencing now is not real "spam", meaning companies that want to get traffic to their site for commercial purposes. What is happening on AH is that the kitchen posts, nutrition, diet, muscle, etc. crap is a front for anti hunting groups that are paying individuals, third world country cheap labor, to relentlessly post junk which gets around the automatic system. Since May 2014 BRICKBURN and I have manually banned well over 1700 individuals that have been able to join the site getting around the automatic systems and when they get through they post junk. Lately they have intensified their efforts, recently they have been getting 40+ through a day which is 10 times what it was last year.

By flooding the site they dilute the content which was the reason that Mr. 16 gauge started the thread... he comes here and wants to visit his community and enjoy himself only to encounter 12 posts of spamming crap until he gets to one good real post. I am glad that he brought up this subject as it is a true source of irritation for everybody as much as it is for him and I want everybody to understand what is behind all of this. It's not that we aren't doing our best to try to prevent or control it, but they keep taking it up a notch. It has gotten to the point that I think the only solution is to hire a few anti spammers to police and monitor the site 24/7 but this will only be something that will work for a while before they find another way to irritate or overwhelm us. I just want to let you guys know that I am working on trying to find solutions as I am not going to let them ruin this site.
