South Africa, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, Mississippi, Louisiana, Maine, Alabama, Georgia, Washington, Wyoming,,, I am sure I missed one or two states.
So with my next trip I will be taking a buffalo. Now then, I am buying a .375 for the trip and a cheaper .375 at that. Due to me being a Police Officer by trade I sure enough can't put high dollar optics on the rifle either. What would be a good optic to put on the rifle? I am thinking a lower power scope. Something I can acquire a target with quickly BUT take that 200 yard shot if needed. I am looking for something in the $300-$500 range, suggestions??? I have looked at the "AR" medium range scopes for "tactical" shooting but would they hold up to the shock of a .375?

Yes I do. The Leupold VX-3 1.5 - 5 x 20 is a classic scope for the .375. http://www.opticsplanet.com/s/leupold-scopes?page=4 They handle recoil in stride and the duplex reticle allows shots close and far. It is a great glass, and I own several. The Optics Planet link lists them for $399.

Well, I guess great minds really do think alike :D

Kudu killer,
Being in the same profession I understand the money tight issue fully it took me about three months to have enough set back for my rifle. I have been looking at Nikon in the Monarch line they make a 1-4x with a German Number 3. As well as other reticles. I'm planning on one of these for my 375 once I shoot it enough to be comfortable with the irons. Attached is a link $279 free shipping.

I have a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36mm with duplex reticle on my 375 Ruger Guide Gun and like it. Mounted it with low Alaskan Arms quick detachable scope rings. That keeps scope low on action for a close cheek weld to comb of stock. That make for a quick snap close range shot. then you have enough power range for farther distance shot. Then later done the road if you want to change the reticle to a different type you can send scope back to Leupold Custom shop and have it changed for $70.00. Also Leupold warranty is good.

Nikon

I'm with everyone on this page - Leupold or Nikon. Whatever you like and find the best price at.

I've always found www.opticsplanet.com to have good prices and selection.

You can't go wrong with a Leupold VX-2 1 x 4 x 20. It worked out just fine for me last year.

Hi KuduKiller,
I would consider these from Leupold. Both in the price range you've specified and great quality and durability.

VX-2 2x-7x X 33mm

VX3 1.5x-5x X 20mm

KuduKiller,

I would also suggest a Leupold VX-3 1.5 - 5 x 20mm with a duplex reticle. It's a terrific moderately priced scope that will fill your needs well. It also has a time proven reputation for reliability.

Whatever you decide to top your .375 with I wish you well and good hunting!

Nikon monarch 1-4 is what I have on my 416. I'm taking it for lion and buff this summer. Great scope, handles recoil like a champ and cost about 400$.

Good morning KuduKiller,

Being a retired Police Officer myself, I'm possibly lower on the financial food chain than you are?
But, even if I were wealthy, I would not strive for a large scope to go with the .375 H&H.

I have owned and hunted with several different rifles in that caliber, both here in Alaska, and in Africa as well.
Some of the deer and caribou I have taken with this caliber were even with nothing more than an older model Redfield peep sight.

Being a dreaded rifle nut and all, I have even shot more than one or two (in Nevada and California) ground squirrels and jack rabbits with my first .375 - a Ruger #1 single shot, on which I had a Leupold 2.5x compact scope.

So far, I have never seen any .375 H&H type hunting situation, wherein more than 4x would have been wanted.
A scope that IMO was near perfect for this caliber was the (long discontinued now) Leupold 3x.
Likewise it'd be a great one on a .404 Jeffery or 10.75x68, again IMO.

Good fortune is bringing one of these 3x scopes back to me very soon now.
Mekaniks is bringing one to my house today for me to buy at a reasonable price (he will be rewarded in Heaven for his kindness to a senile old Hunter).
My plan is to put it on a .404 Jeffery someday but, I have not found one I could afford yet.

Currently I am waiting for Apple Corp. to offer me the position of CEO and/or for The Mayo Clinic to offer me a Brain Surgeon job.
Meanwhile, I've taken to being a Security Guard while I wait for those offers.
So for now, the .404 will have to wait a bit.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

KuduKiller,

For whatever it's worth here's another retired cop and longtime sport hunter who completely agrees with Velo Dog's above post. I've done my fair share of hunting with a .375 H&H over the years and can't think of a time when I felt there was a need for more than 4x.

Just my .2 cents in support of what I feel is the good advice offered above.

Hard to go wrong with the oft-recommended Leupold 1.5-5x. I have had several of them, including on a 375.

My 375 currently has a Nikon African 1-4x with the German #4 (hey, with a name like Arbeiter, how can you not go with the German #4?). :)

I really like this Nikon...I think it is going to stay on the 375! I can certainly recommend it.

My 375 ruger has a 1x3 power weaver that I bought from Midway.

All good scopes mentioned above.

If you want a 30mm tube AND illuminated reticle in a 1-4 or 2-7... Check out a Leupold VXR in 1-4 or 2-7.

There was also discussion on the newer Weaver DG Super Slam scope in both illuminated and non, they seem to be on sale a lot.
