There are some really good deals on certain package hunts, although after numerous African hunts they are full of animals that many of us have already taken , that is why I give a big hats off to outfitters like Paw Print and Bosendal and others who offer multiple animals on a build your own type package where you have the choice, I think that is excellent marketing! Lets us blue collar workers be able to hunt different species.

I'm happy you got a great deal! I have to agree with you 100%, you have to love outfitters that work with you on hunt packages. There are some truly great outfitters on AH! I have looked at this website for 6 years and every time the cream rises to the top on AH.

Hi Jeff,
This is an excellent topic! This is exactly the reason why I removed packages from my website, since most hunters seem to think that they are bound to take the animals in the package, and only those animals. Nothing more and nothing less. I'm sure that I speak for most outfits, but if there are any animals in a package that you have already taken, speak to your outfitter. I'm sure they will do substitutions to something that you wish to rather hunt.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

Great topic Jeff
For a very long time I have not offered any packages, the reason is just that, most first time hunters will look at
1. Kudu
2. Impala
3. Warthog
4. Zebra
5. Wildebeest

Now you will see that I only offer.
1. Spiral Horned
2. Tiny 5
3. Buffalo & Sable
4. Lion combo
&
5. Giraffe packages

Another reason I do not like packages is the following;
You book a 7 day 10 animal hunt for X amount.
How does the outfitter work with you if you do not shoot 1 or 2 of those animals.
In the past I offered packages and stated the individual trophy price of each animal so this would be easy to work with (If you don't shoot you don't pay)

But I have seen packages offered where, if you don't shoot you still pay the total package price.

In my opinion it is best to have a list of animals you would like to hunt.
Send it through to your outfitter/s
and work on a deal with him/them.

Agree 100%. Many first timers started off on packages and it almost always includes the same combination of animals, give or take one. It is a good way to get into hunting Africa. Seasoned African hunters have special trofee needs depending on were they want their collection to go. Any Outfitter worth his salt will accomadate the needs of the hunter. I have substituded one animal for another in a package and the hunter only pays the differance between species as per the pricelist. I have even at my cost let a client shoot another animal if I did not think the animal we hunted made my requirements to go on his wall. I believe guys like Pieter,Marius and Bossie understand what its all about, a passion for the hunt shared with a like minded gentleman or two.

As a first timer headed to SA this coming May I like the package that I have but I also agree with others here that after you have one species of animal why shoot another when there are so many others out there to round out your trophy list? My package has 8 animals on it and I am only really interested in shooting 4 of them and a couple that are not on the package. But I am also able to swap out a couple of my lesser ones that I am not interested in for a warthog which is not on the list so I'll be happy with perhaps only 6 to take home.

Now on my next trip if I do one I would like to do a a la carte type of hunt and pick and choose which animals that I intend to hunt. I guess it all depends on how many times you have been to Africa and what you would like to hang on your wall.

Jeff, what are going to hunt in Africa anyway? I'm feeling the excitement already for you!

If packages are done right and for hunters not always what is best for the outfitters they have there place. There is ways to make a package for the guy who has been there already.

Plus I have seen must of the outfitters on here be willing to change animals if needed. What I like about the packages offered on here they are not like some of the cheesy show package. You dont see the ones were guys try and add baboon and jackals as one of the 5 animals you would get to hunt.

Good news is there will be some real good packages coming soon by a few guys. Some guys in SA just work slow and need time.LOL not going to name names though as that would not be nice just before xmas.

I've seen many adds stating that animals in package cannot be exchanged or swapped. One outfitter who has advertised on the forum states on their web site that other animals can be added AFTER the package animals are all taken. Can't figure that one out? I think most packages if the animals are not all taken there is no discount, this has happened to me so that's why I like those specials where you can pick and choose!

Yes I'm excited to I have parts of 14 days booked split between Paw Print and Bosendal for black and blue wildebeest (no not the bruised kind) zebra, bushbuck, springbok, steenbok and maybe nyala and or eland. And if a huge warthog or impala got in the way I don't have much will power. Flatwater Bill says I can resist anything but temptation! I also would like a jackal and porcupine but I know that's a stretch. So what ever of those gets in bow range they need to look out. I originally booked with Pieter but decided that parts of 7 days was to short a time to be on the ground in Africa and Pieter was booked before my hunt and after my hunt wouldn't work for me to extend it so I booked some days with Bosendal. Before I double booked I cleared it with both outfitters, didn't want any hard feeling, they were very positive and professional. Can't wait!!

I have done exactly this with African Sky. I added to packages and switched some out of another, at the end of the day your outfitter wants you to have a great hunt and get the animals you want.

The outfitter i went with allowed me to build my own package, they also gave my friend and I unlimited jackel, a big male baboon, a warthog sow and a day with the hounds on bush pig all for free! We had a blast to say the least.

At the end of the day, most Outfitters will make sure you have a good time, although it's about business the most important is having a good time and creating new friendships with one another.
I always feel a kind of sadness when it comes to the final days of a Safaris.

This is so true, some safaris you just don't want to end.

Haha he was pushing me into the airport to get me out of there.

Jeff I do think with the two outfitters you picked you will have a great hunt.
