Hello, It's a long story but I booked a leopard hunt for next year and I m rapidly loosing confidence in the hunt. Therefore I m willing to loose my deposit on the hunt and look else where. I can't spend 30k are there any PH's out there can help me book a good leopard hunt for next year?

Hello Sir,

Im note sure about other provinces in SA but Limpopo will only announce the annual tags in late Jan. I'm sure somebody will be able to help you once they know if they have a tag or not.

Otherwise you will have to look at other Countries. There are a few good Outfitters who offer Leopard on this forum in other Countries.

Regards

Well if anyone can help I would appreciate it. I was so excited about the hunt and now I feel I made a bad choice.

I have sent you a PM with a few names of people on this forum who might be able to assist you.

What country were you going to hunt in.Is it the country or the outfitter you have doubts in.

Don't fall in the trap of if you dont pay a certain amount you can't get a good hunt. There is fair priced hunts out there that seem to good to be true but are really good hunts.

Is there a main reason you are having doubt now?

Hi billc, for one there are no leopard photo's on the web site which I was told should not concern me web site is old. Getting a hold of the booking agent is very hard, e mailed the safari company several weeks ago about sending me a letter of invitation in case I get stuck in SA. They responded back they needed additional personal info which I immediately sent them and have not heard back. The hunt is in Namibia so I have no problem there. To be honest my fears were stroked a little yesterday reading some leopard hunt conversations . I ready to loose my deposit if need be as this will probably be a one time deal for me so I don't want to make a mistake! Left a message for Jerome also as I know his hunt is in my price range just don't know if he has a tag available. Have not heard from him yet.

Have you asked them to send any pic's to you direct since there is none on the site.Maybe you could change the hunt to plains game and use your deposit toward that and do the cat hunt also after with some one else.

I did receive a few photos from the booking agent. I have a plains game hunt booked already in South Africa for 2017 which I switched to hunt leopard next year. Not too concerned about the deposit not a rich guy but booking with the right PH is more important to me right now

Well sometimes listing to your gut is the best way.Just remember you must have be ok at sometime booking the hunt.I would not let talk about a hunt being to cheap change my mind unless I had my own doubts how they are handling things now.

If I would have listen to all who said you only get what you pay for I would have taken about half the animals me and my son did.Must places would have cost me almost double what I have paid to hunt africa so far. With go research you can get great hunts at a fair price.

Johnny,

If you have flexibility there seems to be good late season leopards offered every year at great prices. This year I believe James Jeffrey and Jaco Strauss both had late season offers and if I remember correct, both hunts were successful. There may have been more than this but this is what I am remembering off hand. Check into the outfitters/agents that produce. If their price is high let them know you want them to contact you if they have a cancelation or end of year quota at a good price. Check back through the hunts offered section the last 2-3 years. If I remember correct I believe this situation repeats itself.

This post will get you a number of offers to look through. Enjoy the process. That is part of the fun.

All the best on your decision and let us know what you decide. Will look forward to the hunt report!

Hi Johnny

Have you asked Jaco Strauss, what the possibility would be for a Leopard with him in Mozambique. As far as I can remember his area is good for cats. SA (Limpopo) is a mess when it comes to Leopard tags this year. You might get one in SA though, but most of the reputable Outfitters I know did not even bother to apply for a permit this year.
Mozambique would be the best option now.

Jerome will get back to you. I'll ask him to contact you.

John, PM me some details on the Outfitter you placed your deposit and I'll see what I can find out.

Why is SA such a mess to get leopard permits?

Our system is F*******up, now they have a new system that divided the province into zones, now some guys thought it was a great move in the right direction, till you read all the conditions.

Never mind the politics that has also been brought into the whole process...

Why is SA such a mess to get leopard permits?

As Bossie mentioned above it is a bit of a mess in SA as we speak.
1.)there was a glitch with the system to be used for the draw, this was due to the fact that the gps coordinates of each application was not to the correct decimal.
If I read correct, the draw has been postponed to the 13th of JANUARY.

2.Of all provinces in SA Limpopo has by far the largest leopard population, we receive 53 tags a season (hunting allocated), 22 odd are located to the PDI program, a incentive for outfitters to employ black professional hunters and train them in the industry, not provide them with a once off paycheck but train individuals, there are outfitters that got on board with this program and trained legitimate guys and of course others that worked the system.
3.our draw in Limpopo use to be open to limpopo based outfitters only, this was deemed to be unconstitutional, and any outfitter from any province in SA can now apply with hunting rights to a property in Limpopo as well as a registered Limpopo PH.
This brought about a total of .... 1500 applications for 31 leopard tags!
4.nature conservation, in conjunction with Panthera, have come up with the Zone system.
This was initialized to move away from "concentrated" hunts as they call it. The entire province was divided into these zones all averaging 89 000 to 250 000 acres roughly some quite larger.
*only one leopard may be hunted per Zone.
*a minimum of a 1000 ha. property size applies when obtaining hunting rights, should the property be less than 1000 ha. you can obtain hunting rights to neighboring properties to add to your application.
*it works on a point system the more land you have (continual) hunting rights to the more "points" you receive, 1 point or ticket is given per 100 ha. (roughly)
*this means that come draw time if I have 4000 I will have 100 tickets or points in the draw if I have 40 000 hectares my chances increase to be drawn as I have more points.
*if you are drawn in a zone, you can legally hunt any property within the relevant zone to which you have obtained hunting rights.
*if you are drawn in a zone you will have until July 31st to complete your safari or your tag will be distributed to the back up list that was drawn.
*if you are drawn on the back up list you will have time to I believe end of September to complete your safari or it will be cast into an open pool and any outfitter can then sell it at short notice upon Natcon issueing you the permit and the right to market mentioned tag.

Interesting thing though is that this system was implemented by Natcon without taking the PDI (contracted system) between outfitters and govt. Into consideration, which threw a spanner the size of the pan handle into the works.

Now Limpopo is sitting with 22 blacked out zones in which resident outfitters that were not part of the initial PDI plan can not apply in, even though some of them might own 50 000 acres within that zone...

In my honest opinion, it was bulldozed onto the guys, as all decisions by Natcon have almost been before, but if the issues can be ironed out this system could be to the benefit of LEOPARD in the long run.

Age appropriate off take of which I am a huge supporter will be implemented next season and only males above a certain age will be allowed to be harvested (which has it's technical issues)
*no female will be exported.

But I'm all for age appropriate harvesting.

I hope this give you guys an idea, of what is going on, for now I'll stick to Moz.

My best always

It would not surprise me that anyone with property will try to get a tag and then bargain with someone who has property in the zone to enhance the amount of land they can hunt, with the land owner getting a payoff for opening their land to hunting. It is far from a perfect system, we will have to see how it plays out.
