I'm looking for a New/Used spotting scope,,this scope will most likely spend it's days at the range so Size and weight won't come in play. Its use will be to spot holes in paper for Calibers from 6.5 to 375 out to 300 Yds. I understand the big names will get the job done but I don't want to spend 1K and up for the big names. Iv'e had great luck with Vortex,Nikon, leupold in Rifle scopes so I know their quality and performance. So is there any real sleepers or under the radar Spotters even Older units out there without spending the Price of Airfare to SA. I'd like to be in the 5-700 USD Retail. thanks for the help,,Rob

ive got 2 of them oldboy,
one is an old leupold 15-45 x 60 and the other a burriss in the same demensions.
either will do what you want .
they were around 300 aussies each . both came with tripods ,and carry cases ,
if you were down here id give you one of them .......
as im stepping up a better swarvo 15 x 56 binnos ,as they are more practical for what I want .

Thanks Bluey, I also have 2 a cheap Gander Mountain(don't know who makes them) and a Konus 20x60x80 that I thought would do the job but it's a bloody disappointment,You get what you pay for

these will show 17 hmr, holes on paper out 130 mtetres ,no worries.
and 300 out past 300

Christ Bluey don't tempt me, but if I fly to upside down land we better do a little hunting,,any way my zip is 55435 Bloomington Minn

we shoot the first deer we see ,rob .
its what we eat over the 2/3 days , the meat will already be hanging by the time I get there .
its not very often that we don't see deer every day ,while flicking lures .
ive just winched up my last shot and will be unloading most of tonight , l will go to the post office some time tomorrow and find out what the postage is .
sounds like you want the luepold ,its in a hard case with a tripod .
probly weighs 4 kgs max.
bloke that's a whole lot of numbers for a zip(ha ha ha )code.

You might also consider "shoot N See" targets? I started using them and and now I leave the spotting scope at home and just take binocs FWIW. They are a little more expensive than paper targets but come with repair patches which extend target life considerably.

just got splatter targets ,but havnt opened them up yet.

I have a very old Bushnell 15-30X that has served me well for years (more than I care to think about) It was all I needed for hunting sheep in AK and target sighting.
As I got older, I acquired a Leupold 15-45X which serves me very well, however it's quite a bit heavier and more finicky (or maybe I'm older??).
If you go with the Leupold, plan on buying a much sturdier bipod, one like professional photographers use. and realize the higher the magnification, the more prone it is to shakes and wobbles, My leupold just doesn't quite balance ona tripod like my bushnell does.

Iv'e been using those for a while but with my spotter anything past 250 is still a blurr

I thought about rigging up something the I could hook my cell phone camera to and view it from my computer but something tells me one errant shot could get expensive,,imagine how difficult explaning how you shot a hole in your cell phone to your insurance company would be

i have a 15-45x60 Leupold and its great for out to 100 yards. however if 300 yards is the goal then i would want something more powerful such as the Leupold SX-1 20-60x80.

In my experience those Leupold 15-45x scopes are less than wonderful, tending to get fuzzy around 23x to 25x.

I suggest the following test procedure:

Test for brightness by trying it at an indoor smallbore range.

Test for clarity throughout the zoom range by focussing on a nice sharp printed bull's-eye target at 100m/yd (using full magnification at short range would simply drive you mad and not prove anything).

I agree that the Konus scopes are rubbish for shooting purposes, been there and tried that.
