i was wondering what people think of the cartridge also recommendations on rifles to purchase in the caliber .470 Nitro Express

470 NE is a great cartridge and in the quality double it will take any game.

also a caliber that IMHO most probably holds its value in a double rifle the best
 
The most popular of the double cartridges. The make will depend on your budget.
 
Very possibly my wife's new rifle in a Merkel S/S, non-ejector.:D

Marius, Why the non-ejector?

I have shot both ejector and non-ejector rifles and shotguns, however i have learned to like the ejector guns the best.

I have one that i can change from ejector to non-ejector and i shoot it both ways. If i have the time and want to save the empties i use the non-ejector option, however if i want reloading at a premium i set the gun to eject the spent casing.

I've fired more than one brand of .470 double and even though they are at least as powerful as the .458 Winchester (comparing factory loads to factory loads), those did not seem to recoil quite as much as the various .458's I have fired

No doubt it's partly due to doubles generally being heavier than bolt rifles but I believe it's also due to achieving about the same velocity with a .500 gr bullet but at way lower chamber pressure.

It is a shame that Ruger does no offer their No1 Single Shot in .470 with 26: barrel and oval cheek piece.

They could call it their "Africa Nunmber One" or something like that.

Hey James,
There is no question what is quicker to reload, the ejector model, of course. The consensus though among many of the PH's I hunt dangerous game with, is that should you run into problems with dirt, it could affect your ejectors, leaving you busy hunting dangerous game and needing to dig out spent cases with a knife or sharp object. With the non-ejector model, everything is manual, so the cases will be pushed out, no matter what.
As I am currently in the market, what is your opinion about this?

As for being dirty, i have found that it make little difference if the the gun is set in ejector or not-erector if the gun casing stays stuck in the chamber or only partially comes out when the gun is dirty.

Then you can either use a knife to pry or a rod to tap or hammer the casing out.

The gun can be dirty, however the chamber need to be clean and the ejectors lubricated for the casing to come out.

When i lubricate my ejectors, i manually move them while applying a synthetic oil until the oil runs clear. Barrel is on a block of wood over a piece of carper or rug and i use a screw driver handle to push on the ejector, while dripping the oil in place. I am usually sitting down with the barrel between my legs.

i have not take my ejectors out, except for my Perazzi and Krieghoff shotguns.

But, like I said, if we are busy hunting and the chamber does get dirty, then there is no time to find a rod, or tool. Especially for what the rifle gets used for. Therefor, with extractors, it manually pushes the case out.
Things happen quickly, dust flies, sometimes PH's fly, rifles fly.
I tried to keep my bolt action clean on dangerous game hunts, but as soon as I realized that it was a lost cause, everything went a lot smoother. I just take the time afterwards to clean it now.
But, thanks for your reply. Your comments has gained some points on the ejector side. I'm far from decided.
You know with our gun laws, you have to make sure before you buy.
I believe that I have settled on the 470NE over the 500NE also.
 
I got the Krieghoff 470 non ejector, pretty happy with it. Ejectors was not a serious consideration to me, at the range you need to fire a stopper reloading is not going to happen anyway. No doubt ejectors have their place and uses, was just not my mayor concern as a back up rifle.
