i was wondering what people think of the cartridge also recommendations on rifles to purchase in the caliber
thanks

fantastic caliber, the 400g hits really hard , the Rigby case capacity is really what makes the caliber as well as the History around it .

IMHO the best value for money 416 available is the CZ 550 , however they need to be tweaked by gunsmiths who know there CZ's , once worked on they are great.

Loaded to it's potential, which is far more than when it was first made from what I can tell, it's a hammer. Both for animals, but also on your shoulder. Loaded down just a bit, you still have a hammer but with lower pressure and a bit less recoil.

Go with 350gr A-Frames or 370gr North Forks or some of the other lighter CEB offerings and you have a single bullet solution for DG and PG.

Be forewarned however that brass is quite pricy.

On the used market, look for a Ruger Safari Magnum (RSM). If you can find one in .416 Rigby, (I paid $1400 for mine a year ago). They stopped making them in the early 2000s. It is a fantastic rifle, and beautiful too. Some will go for as much as $2000. If you are interested in a single shot, look for a Ruger 1H. They are hard to find in the Rigby caliber. Mine was made in 1997 and I paid $1000 for it. Once again it is gorgeous also! Everything I have read claims the caliber is accurate out to 200 yards even though I have never shot mine at that range. I don't believe any other caliber of this size claims a range out to 200 yards.

Some of you with more experience with the big bores chime in!

Good note Phil, never throw away .416 Rigby brass, even if you don't reload!

I can't speak on the Rigby but I love 416's. I have 416 ruger that is most definitely accurate at 200 yards. From my limited knowledge the Rigby has been around for quite sometime and is a tried and true dangerous game caliber. As with all large caliber s it's probably going to kick like a mule. My 416 Ruger is no different but with the muzzle brake on mine it is very manageable.

I love all the 416's! its probably the most practical caliber for using on both DG and PG. a 400gr bullet at 2300fps will effectively bring down ANY game on the planet!

my flavor is a 416 Remington Magnum. this is easily the least expensive of the 416's and is just as powerful as the others.

The beauty of the 416 Rem is that Winchester make a Mod 70 , which is a great rifle that needs very little to no work out of the box.

with modern powders the 416 Rem in Model 70 is also a great choice .

.416 rigby is a great calibre and if you want one all round rifle with more power than the .375h&h then this is it. i have had 4 over the years all made by rigbys so am biased when it comes to the make of rifle ;)

.416Rigby is mythic and well matched with a Ruger 77 RSM (used market ) or CZ 550 Safari Magnum ... but this is an expensive cartridge !!
I prefer my .416RM, cheaper, same performance, available. This ammo is very well matched with the current Winchester 70 Safari Express !!
Scope Leupold 1.5-5x20 for its eyerelief and reliability.
.416's are today the better choice for Africa.

I love the .416 Rigby! Mine is in a Ruger 77RSM and I couldn't be happier with it. The CZ is a fine rifle, but the fit and finish on the Ruger are more pleasing to my eye.

My favorite caliber. The RSM is hard to beat if you can find one, I live mine. 416 Rigby will do it all.

Blasphemy, nothing short .500 could ever be a practical caliber for PG .... sorry Matt, that was a cheap shot :)!

I really like it. I have a two 416 RMs and now I have a 416 Rigby as well. I like them both. They are very similar as pointed out but I like the history and added case capacity (lower pressure) of the 416 Rigby.

I am totally jealous that you have had 4 Rigby rifles! This is completely unfair!

.416 Rigby and .375 H & H spell.......AFRICA, for at least the last 100 years!

I am baised, got a CZ55o Lux model in 416 Rigby and out of the box it was perfect, compared to getting my Remington 700 S/S in 30-06 to be the same. Hand load with decent 300 grain "plains type bullets" at 250o fps+ and it shoots accurrate and relatively flat to 300+ meters (especially good for Oryx in the Kalahari and Namibia), and as a bonus it will put down anything in Africa with 400 grainers.

I have both a Ruger and a CZ 550, I like the CZ better. 1 more in the magazine and it seems to fit better, less felt recoil. That said there is nothing wrong with either rifle.
