Is it practical to rebarrel a CZ 550 375 H&H to a .404 Jeffrey? How much to do it?

I'm just kicking ideas around. It's camp fire talk, something to talk about and maybe learn something.

E, you're just sucking up to DOC. :)

I've done it all. Full customs, modified sporters, sporterised ex-military rifles. Off the shelf rifles.
Yes it can be done with a lot of work but you will need a knowledgeable gunsmith to get it right.

The cheapest way to get a different calibre is to buy a new factory rifle. The savings in time and money are significant.

yes it is , this is the route I was taking just before I found my 404 Jeff.

Afraid with the action work, new barrel, bolt face work etc., yeah. Its usually less expensive to just find the right rifle. Unfortunately the CZ is around 3K now in .404J. Wish there were more choices.

It's been a few years since I had it done, but mine is a rebarrled Winchester M70 that was originally a 300 RUM. I had it rebarreled by PacNor, then a local gunsmith add a band which was both a sight base and recoil lug, barrel band swivel, and banded front sight. Also added Leupold VX3 1.5-5 with Talley rings and bases. Total cost was roughly $2,500 for entire thing including the donor rifle. That was about the going rate for the CZ 404 at the time.

I seem to remember a wildcat cartridge that was essentially just a 375 H&H necked up to .423 caliber (not blown out like the 416 Remington). If you're a handloader and a wildcatter it might be an interesting way to go. 470 Capstick is another thought.

Thanks for the ideas, these are interesting options.

Enysee I am getting ready to do just that to a 375 RugerRSM. I am sending the action to PAC-NOR. I have a quote to remove the old barrel install and chamber a new new match chrome-moly barrel for $560 plus shipping. The also list CZ as actions they work on. Will have to ask them about if they need to open the bolt face. 375 is .532 and the 404 is .537 so not sure if it will need to be opened any or just a tad. Will let you know what they say when I send in the action. They also said it would be 6-8 weeks to get it back.

Wow, AZDAVE that is more like it for costs, I could see doing for that kind of money. Especially if it cycles and feeds cartridges smoothly.

What not buy another rifle? There's a CZ 550 404 Jeff on Gunbroker for $2,900. I got a real deal on my that I bought last year. Cabelas had ordered a bunch of the magnum rifles from CZ - $2,300 with jeweled bolt.

I'd gladly do it for the $2300 but $2900 is too much.

triple river gunsmithing told me they would rebarrel my CZ 375 H&H to 404 Jefferey for $700.

i ended up deciding a Winchester M70 in 416 RM was a better choice for me.

We have one of those, a LH stainless classic (CRF) model I bought for my oldest son. It's a nice gun. Congrats!

Pac-nor let me know that the barrel arrived and that they could match the exact contour of my current barrel. They said that mid Feb it should be complete. Will post impressions or the work and photo when I get it back.

Thanks AZDAVE, I want to know how it turns out.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
