Big Bore Addiction Group

an excellent choice in barrels for your Krieghoff! with that one rifle you now have both DG and PG covered.

not a bad looking shotgun either! I can tell it was given you those puppy dog eyes saying "take me home!". I hate it when a gun looks at me like that...

Yep, it turned its barrels slightly sideways and looked up at me with a little whine..

Those puppy eyes looked so very sad I felt I had to give her a new home.

Timt,
You Sir, are a very compassionate man. This whole Big Bore Addiction Club is almost like a UNICEF for guns.... For the price of a box of high brass a day, this poor little Nitro Express won't have to sit on the shelf anymore! Lol

Well, is there anyone of us that don't have a soft spot for all the lonely abandoned guns out there that need a new home where they can be loved? ;)

Videos as promised.

I wife loves strays, but alas just doesn't see rifles in the same manner as dogs....

It looks like the .470 fits you well. Not much flip at all. You'll be deadly with the follow up shot for sure!

Yeah that rifle fits me perfectly!
The 470 kicks less than some of the 300 magnums I have shot. Just going to mount a holographic sight on it to be even quicker on the follow up!

But since the 470 doesn't kick at all the thought is starting to creep into my mind... How about a bigger double?

You are definitely in the right place Timt!

1. I completely agree on the .300 mag - that sharp kick is the worst!
2. A .500 NE does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

From a pure speed/function standpoint you can't beat a holigarchy or red dot sight, IMO. When my eyes will no longer allow for open sights (which is soon...) that would be my choice on a double.

Yeah I feel right at home here!

All the 300mags have a sharp kick I really don't like!

A 500ne double does have a nice ring to it.. but the next step up for fun and kicks (!) would probably be a 600ne:rolleyes:

I love the red dots myself and love to use them for driven hunting on all my rifles. Will be a qr mount though so I can remove them quickly if the batteries run out or something else happens. Atleast I know I can use the open sights then!

First time out hunting for this double will be the 13/12-16/12.
Will be a driven hunt for wild boar and fallow deer in Poland! Taking the 470 barrel set to get some nice practise in with it! Oh, and a gopro mounted to my thick skull to record it all!

Fr8liner, being as your hobby is shooting down trees you will need something much bigger then a 450 NE 3.25"! I would say at least a 500 is in order for such tasks. if your looking for a double then either the 500 NE 3" or the 577 NE 3" would be perfect for the task. the 500 NE 3" can be had in a double for a reasonable price while the 577 NE 3" might be a tad more expensive. i see new Merkel doubles in 500 NE 3" available all the time.

Okay so - Krieghoff 470NE or Krieghoff 500NE? There is a former available but I think I could find the latter if I looked hard enough.

That 577 NE sounding good but I worried about ammo on Africa!

Nice rifles Timmy! That double does fit your shooting style well, never easy being a lefty in the gun world:D Feel sorry for those boars being hit with the 470NE, then again there are some "Tanks" among them that needs stopping. "Lycka till Kompis" At least my hunting is better than my Swedish:)

Timt,

Excellent choice in calibers and maker for your new rifle, I salute you for it.

The AyA looks very fine as well, they make some very excellent shotguns for a reasonable price, considering how well they are fit and finished.

Regarding the .600 you mentioned, I have fired one and the recoil itself was not as fierce as I had feared but, it was plenty for sure.

However the rifle itself (I am shown firing it on www.calpappas.com) was so heavy (John Wilkes maker, Pre-War) that I cannot imagine carrying such a heavy weapon for very many hours in the African sun.

I cannot remember if Cal said it weighed 16 pound or 18 but it felt like much more than I would care to hold onto, hour after mile in the hot sun.

A .500 on the other hand can weigh 11 or 12 pounds and not break anyone's shoulder off, not even mine and I am a recoil sissy.

Congratulations on the new hardware.
Velo Dog.

Thanks Tokkie!
Yeah beeing a lefty makes life hard (and expensive!) when it comes to guns :(

Im sure the boars will just love the 470!
Atleast they will not run all that far when hit!
Unless you read some of the Swedish hunting forums... anything less then a haubiz just bounce off the big boars..

Thanks Velo Dog!
The AyA was cheap and fitted me very well so I am very happy with it. Just hate the 4 week waiting time before I get the license for it. Guess I'm lucky since some parts of Sweden have a 6-18 week wait for their rifles.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the fit and finish was!

Yeah, the 600Ne is not a practical gun, it would be way to heavy to carry all day if you want it shootable aswell.
Feels like the 500 is the natural choice for a bigger bore rifle if it is for every day use.
But for the fun faktor a 600 would be oh so fun to own!

Big problem is finding one in Sweden that is within budget and that I can shoot as a lefty. So it will most probably stay a dream. But it is always fun to have something big and slightly odd to dream about!

instead of a 600 NE double, why don't you get a bolt gun chambered in 600 Over Kill. you can easily load the 600 OK to what ever speed you wish from 1900-2300fps using a 900gr .620" bullet. I believe most load it to around 2000-2100 fps. another good option would be the 577 tyrannosaur, this throws a 750gr .585" bullet at any where from 2000-2400fps. both the 577 T-rex and the 600 OK are cheaper to buy and shoot then the 577 NE and 600 NE.

RANGE REPORT: just got home from taking my new Win M70 in 416 RM to the range and I had a blast! first, as predicted the gun is a bit light at 9 pounds for heavy loads. shooting the Hornady factory ammo which throws a 400gr bullet chronographed at 2380fps the rifle was a real handful. the factory ammo grouped nicely at around an inch at 50 yards using iron sights off a tripod (could do better with practice). with the scope adding an extra pound and some change the gun will be a joy to shoot.

what I found really interested was the results of my fire forming. I had taking some PPU 375 H&H brass and opened the mouth up to .416" with dies and loaded it with a 400gr RN bullet over 75gr of W760. this ammunition looked terrible as the cases didn't shape evenly when the dies opened the mouth up. however, despite the poor shape and ugly looks they actually shot decently! using the fire forming loads I was able to shoot about 1.5-2 inches at 50 yards with a measured velocity of 2115fps.

Hey matt85, sounds like you had a good time on the range!

I have been considering the 600OK since I first heard of it. Really interesting caliber with plenty of power to it!

The troubles I ran into was considerable even though most of them could be overcome.
The only company I know that builds a 600OK is AHR. Fine company and getting them to send one over the pond to Sweden is doable even if the freight is to say the least costly!
Being a lefty really makes it hard aswell since there is very few actions for me to choose from.

The biggest problem I ran into was on this side of the pond. The police would not issue a license for the caliber since it wasn't already on the list of "accepted calibers". Not unless the Swedish hunting agency gave the thumbs up and declared it "suitable for swedish game". And yes, it has to be suitable for Swedish game, you won't get a license for it if you state the intended use is African game or "fun".

They didnt buy my explanation that I wanted it for bear hunting and followup on wounded game like bear and boar :(

Strangely the 700NE is on the list of suitable calibers...

Might give it another try to see what they say about it just to be annoying and see if it goes through.
Brass is a later problem, bullets I can always cast myself if I have to!

the 700 NE is suitable for Swedish game but the 600 OK is not?!?!:confused:

Yep,
Im guessing its all in the name!
Some desk jockey probably took one look at the name and thought it was too much.

Might try with a metric designation next time (15.7x76BR) to see if it makes a difference.
Looks like a fun caliber otherwise. Even if my shoulder kind of disagrees with me!

yes, I think its the name. try the metric designation and see if that passes.

Timt think older much older; a nice double 8 bore has a nice ring to it:ROFLMAO:

sitting around the house on an unusual day off of work (not sure what to do with myself). so I decided to take another picture for this thread:

.416" bullets

left - right: 22 LR (reference), Hornady 400gr FMJ (old style), Swift 400gr A-frame, Barnes 400gr solid (old style), Barnes 400gr TSX, Barnes 300gr TSX, Speer 350gr SP, 22 LR (reference)

notes of interest:
- the Barnes 300gr TSX and the Speer 350gr SP are the same length (speer bullet is 0.002" longer).
- the Hornady 400gr FMJ has about the same bearing surface as the Swift 400gr A-frame.

the first note isn't so important since the two bullets are of different weights and the TSX has grooves cut in the bearing surface. but the second note is important for any one who hand loads Swift A-frames. two bullets with the same bearing surface and the same weight will generally shoot to a very similar point of impact. so if your using Swift A-frames and your looking for a solid that will shoot to the same point of aim then the Hornady FMJ would be something to try. unfortunately it appears the DGS is designed slightly differently then the FMJ and might not work as well but still would be worth a shot.

enough of my rambling.
