There is probably a more direct way, but I always put videos on Youtube and then post the link. That way I can access the videos more easily in the future.
 
this followed me home from the local gun store today:


a new Winchester M70 Safari Express in 416 Remington Magnum. shes not the prettiest thing to sling a bullet but the balance is nice and the action is sturdy and reliable. if she shoots well then it will be my new PG rifle.

thanks, sorry the picture didn't come out very good. I really need a new camera.

turns out I ordered the wrong bases so its going to have to wait to get a scope. without a scope it sits at a trim 9 pounds on the dot. should be interesting throwing 400gr bullets at 2350fps out of a 9 pound gun :D. (my 375 H&H weighs more then this rifle)

At least you get to test the open sites! Should be nice and frisky recoil:D Have a pre64 in 375 lying in the safe, much heavier than my CZ Lott use to be, but after the 2nd dentist visit I got use to the Lott:ROFLMAO:

Excellent working rifle.
I've owned a pile of Pre-64 Model 70s from .243 through .375 H&H, plus a newer CRF in .458 Winchester.
All of them were excellent.

Regarding the .416 Remington cartridge in the 9 lb rifle, perhaps you could load it down to the good old Pre-War .404 Jeffery ballistics to help dampen the recoil?
I've been shooting my CZ in the Rigby version at that level and it's much easier on my shoulder.
However, just like yourself, I've been considering using my .416 for PG someday.

And so, I have been intending to try the Woodleigh 340 gr JSP bullet at about 2400 fps.
The majority of African hunting conditions usually puts PG shots under 100 yds and 200 yds is the furthest I have shot anything in South Africa (Limpopo area - klipspringer across a canyon).
So, 2400 fps is the most velocity I have ever hunted with there (.30-06 220 gr also .375 H&H 300 gr) and for buffalo & PG, I used 2050 fps with fine success (.450 No2 NE 480 gr).

Not sure if I will ever actually take my .416 to South Africa/Limpopo District, if/when I go back, but if I do and only for PG, I will not need more than 2400 fps.
In the event I go back to Namibia though or the Eastern Cape of SA, I will bring something that shoots a bit flatter (I hunted Namibia with a .300 H&H - 180 gr Nosler Partitions and would definitely consider doing so again).

as far as recoil goes... im just gonna suck it up and shoot full loads without the scope for now. If I cant handle a little 416 then what am I gonna do about my 505 Gibbs!

for PG I plan on using a light mono-metal bullet such as the Barnes 300gr TSX, CEB 300gr ESP Raptor, or the GSC 330gr HV. I plan on loading them to around 2700-2750fps which should give me some reach with the rifle.

i am planning on tryin to fire form some 375 H&H brass using a mild load. i took 20 pieces of once fired PPU 375 H&H brass and ran them threw a 450/400 NE sizer then a 416 RM sizer. this brings the case up to a 416 but makes the brass somewhat lop sided and the taper is still too much to fit full 416 RM charges in. i filled the cases with 75gr of W760 ball powder and capped them with old Hornady 400gr RN bullets (picked up on GB for cheap). at least in theory this should fire the old bullets at around 2100-2150fps and fire form the brass to the proper shape for future use.

I've always liked big guns. I started hunting as a child with an old Stevens single shot 12 gauge shotgun with a 30" full choke barrel. My shoulder stayed black & blue throughout squirrel season as we always had a good treeing dog and therefore shot a lot of whole lot of squirrels each year, not to mention the birds and rabbits we picked up by chance. One of the very few things my ole man ever offered to buy me was a new 20 gauge shotgun, so that he wouldn't have to see those bruises on my shoulder, but I wouldn't have it. I wore them bruises just as proudly as I'd later sport my football battle scars, and besides, that old Stevens would peel a squirrel off the side of a big oak way higher than my huntin' buddies daddy's bird guns they used would!

Well for years now I have had the 10 gauge shotgun, 50 cal muzzle loaders, 454 Cassul and 460 S&W Magnum revolvers, 10mm auto... and when it comes to rifles I love my fast 30's, but ever since my first safari in Africa, I have been enamored by the 375 H&H Magnum. So after much looking at lotsa different makes and models and thinking about it a lot I finally lucked into a sweet Remington Custom Shop KS SS in 375 H&H that was nicely tricked out and we got along great! I figured this rifle was all the 375 that I'd ever need.

Well this past October, I was fortunate enough to hunt Cape buffalo with Earnest Dyason of Spear Safaris on a last minute cancellation hunt that I learned about while boarding a plane to Africa for work. Immediately following my 5 week hitch offshore I flew to Phalaborwa, South Africa and joined Koos Moulder who would be my PH for the next week. Long story short, I borrowed a Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in the wonderful 375 H&H magnum from Ernest that was passed down to him by his father. Topped by a ancient Kahles fixed 4 power scope, that old rifle stole my heart as I carried it for the next week taking my first Cape buff and a few plains game animals as well. It carried and shot so well that I swore I'd try to find one like it if I could.

Low and behold I just found a Winchester model 70 chambered in the 375 H&H that is in great original condition and was manufactured in 1950 for sale at a reasonable price. I am trying to buy it and I will be one happy camper if the deal goes through.

There are other bigger and badder calibers out there for sure, but for me the 375 Holland & Holland Magnum gets the job done with so much character and class and it's rich history is undeniable...
But that's just me, and what do I know? I'm just a youngster!

nothing wrong with the 375 H&H, that's where I started. I was perfectly happy with my 375 H&H, right up until I pulled the trigger on a rifle chambered in 500/416 NE (400gr bullet at 2325fps). suddenly the 375 was small... now I own a 505 Gibbs. :confused:

if your happy with your 375 and wish to stay with it then my advice is not to ever shoot any thing bigger. :D

Hello Jeff,

I'm not the first person to say these words but I will say them again.

If I was stuck with only one rifle, I would want it to be a .375 H&H Mauser, with a sturdy 4x scope like the one you described in your post.

The good old full length claw extractor Model 70 is nothing more than a streamlined Mauser and I like them.

So I picked up my Krieghoff 470NE with extra barrels in 9.3x74r yesterday!

Got out this morning to shoot it and was loving every second of it!
