Hi Guys

Please join me by posting some of your predator control success pictures, any pictures will be appreciated.
I just came back from a night hunt and got a Caracal and African Wild Cat. This Caracal is believed to be the culprit that killed 26 Sheep in 3 weeks.

This is my first African Wild Cat, the opportunity presented itself and I took it.

I used my FoxPro Firestorm, Faulk's P-60A Predator Caller and Night Site on the 7x57 Mauser.

I got this Jackal on Monday night. The owner of the farm I shot the Jackal loose between 3 and 7 Goats a week from Jackal, Caracal.

What call work best for you on the different species?
Hi Jerome
I started with the "Luscious lips" for about 2 minutes then went over to "Crazy critters" it took about 4 minutes for the Caracal to appear.
I don"t have a specific calls that I would say works for different species but what I use the most is the following.
1. Luscious lips
2. Crazy critters
3. Blue Jay Distress
4. Dying Jack
5. Lil Jack
6. Woodpecker distress
7. Quail distress
They prove to work the best on any predator and for back up I always have the Faulk's with me.

Another successful night went by.
This one came running to the call and stopped right under the FoxPro at 15 Yards.

Nice Bossie! There is not much that give me a better feeling than when one can connect one these problem animals. I have been wrestling with a tank of a Jackal there by us. The terrain has just been kind to him on the two times that I have called him in.
Its been about 1.5 months since the last time I called him in. I will give him another month to settle before I try him again. Maybe change my position, and catch him when he crosses me.
He will make a mistake. I'm counting on it.

The Jackal is much like the Coyote in the states. The calls seem to work well even during the day time if you also lay down some animal remains like entrails. At my deer camp we shoot the thinks on site and we trap Bobcats which are similar in size to your Caracal. The Bobcats really hurt or young turkey population so hunting them at any opportunity is a must. I hope you continue to take your problems out!

Thanks Marius

Keep me posted on the Jackal please, I think it is a wise to wait for another month or so before you try him again. Change location as well. Use a different call than the previous time. I never use the Jackal call or any of those locator calls.

What caller system do you use?

Bossie,
I use a Foxpro Fury. I'm thinking of climbing into a tree that overhangs two roads that lead to the patch that he always crosses and basically whack him on his way to the caller. You know that the Eastern Cape is not the flattest, so the area that he stays is really difficult. Luckily I have never shot at him once I got him in as I could not be confident in only seeing him in flashes. Just left the caller off, and let him be.
Very interesting to hear why you don't use Jackal calls. You feel that you scare away any jackal that might be young or not brave enough?Distress is always the safe option, but not sure if its enough to get a dog to come and look.
Do you have any experience with these flapping things that is suppose to draw the attention of a jackal during the day. Had one out the last time, and that jackal decided to run right against the bush line, close to where I was sitting. Now, I'm wondering if he was not scared of this thing moving in his area.

Marius I am not sure but for some reason I believe that the Jackal call does not work, I have never shot a Jackal when I use it first.
I bought a decoy and still waiting for it, I hope it works. I have seen guys use it and it works well on Bobcat and Coyote.
Go on YOUTUBE "Furtakers" that is where I saw it work well

Another sly Jackal was fooled today. This one was taken at around 5:45 pm this afternoon.

that's one happy young chap.

You guys are having to much fun.Next trip going try try some calling and get a carcal.

I will start by saying I have not hunted any African predators but I'm sure what we do here in the states will relate.

I'm not an expert predator hunter but I've killed a truck load so I thought I would weigh in a little and maybe some of this would help on the jackals too.

When calling fox in southwest Texas I often use a fox sound but only after a distress sound and here's why. You have to remember that a critter coming to a call is doing so to look for a meal, in the event he runs up on a larger predator he may become the meal so my thinking is to start my calling with a prey distress sound then switch to the fox sound.

We have coyotes and fox in the same areas and coyotes will eat fox so if you are a fox and you barge in on a coyote having dinner it could be bad news. By getting their attention with the distress then switching to a fox sound it helps to insure the incoming fox he is likely dealing with another fox.

I've called several coyotes by using a fox distress first but it's not often that a fox will come in, if something is chewing on your buddies leg your best bet for survival is to stear clear but if you hear a rabbit being eaten then you hear what sounds like another fox then you could likely steal the meal.

A jackal not being the biggest predator around may not come into a jackal sound at full speed for fear it's one of his compadres being eaten.

When using a coyote sound for a coyote, mating, or territorial, a coyote will often give you his wind to alert the other coyote, which he thinks you are, that he is approaching. When using a jackal sound to start your calling pay attention to your up wind side.

I would love to try my hand on the African predators one day and see how the animals react in comparison to ours here.

Thanks for the input CMC. What you mentioned here I think, is proven out there.
a Distress call for about 5 minutes and then a Jackal call afterwords, works like a charm.

All you said makes perfect sense, when a Jackal hears a distress he might come closer, but stay out of sight till he is sure that it is not a Hyena or some bigger predator that caught the pray.
I have seen this a few time now, once you play the distress call and then the Jackal call, those Jackals come in flying.

Many thanks for the advice and input. If you have a any pictures, please post some here.

Here's my son with one of the bigger cats for Texas, 32 pounds, I called it with a mouth call and he shot it at 8 yards when he was 10.

Here's a nice coyote I called in for my brother.

Not the best pic but me and my son after one nights work.

I called this cat with no call just using my mouth.

Some of the fastest and most action packed calling is for raccoons, they come in hard and want to fight. One of these actually hit my leg before I could get a shot off.

For you guys that have a Fox Pro I would love to hear how the sound "snowshoe hare" works for you, if it's not on your call you can load very easily. I've used this sound from Canada to Mexico and I assure you there are no snowshoe hares in Mexico. This sound has been my most productive for any critter here I've called. I would love to see if one of you guys would use it and let us see the results.

That reminds me, don't get hung up on the name of the sound. I have no idea what a snowshoe hare sounds like but when I play it the sound works. My buddies laughed when I played it in south Texas but I told them coyotes can't read they don't care what you call the sound, they are the big dogs on the block and something smaller than them sounds like its being killed and eaten so of course they come to look. I listen to a sound and from passed experience decide if I like it. I've used sounds I swore were gonna be great and got nothing and I've sounds that I could barely stand to listen to but shot coyotes so don't think just because a sound may be called a woodpecker but you have no woodpeckers around that it won't work. Jackals don't know that it's suppose to be a North American woodpecker they just know it's smaller than them and likely tasty.
