Does this happen much? I'm considering sending a rifle via courier rather than have hassles at airports? Anyone ever tried it?

where are you going that it cant travel with you ?
if you are having a stop over some wheres , maybe .
but new Zealand , south Africa , Australia , and Canada aren't that hard ,
saying this Australia would be the hardest , in my opinion ,any rate.
as long as everything is done correctly its pretty smoothe.
the first time l took a firearm from Australia to south Africa , it seemed intimidating . but with help from customs/ border protection .
going out of there way to ensure we had everything on paper was correct, the morning we left Melbourne/Tullamarine .
it was a walk in the park .

Must admit Bluey im not looking forward to travel with my rifle either .
Mrs dory wants to stop some where for a break maybe Perth , But carrying a rifle is going to make it a real hassel .
Just sending it to Namibia and back by itself sounds like a good idea .
Would it ever get there , probably get nicked some where . Then youve still got your ammo ?

don't know dory , never done it .
I always take my firearm and bow with me .
ive never been anywhere where I couldn't take them .
playing around Canada it got a bit bothersome lugging on our road trip before the so called hunt we spent a fortune on , but after when we made a friend and she took us fishing and seeing the sights of b.c it was all good just thru them in the back of her yank tank . and away we went
the few night we stayed in a motel l just made sure the person at the front desk knew l had them .

You will not skip any paperwork by having the firearm shipped.
In fact, I believe it would be more hassle and much higher risk of someone making it disappear.

Instead of the meet and greet stuff this would be a service to provide.

I did use a service in RSA that held our guns for two weeks while we toured after our hunt (as we were heading into National Parks) and then met us at ORTambo immediately before departure. Not a hitch.

I've just booked a safari in Namibia and the issue is that I'm off to Europe for a couple of weeks afterwards which will make traveling through 3-4 countries up there a real pain if I have the rifle.
I definitely want to use my rifle as hunting in Africa is a rare occurrence for a gun nut like me and will add some real provenance to my Winchester.

Sporting shops in Namibia would do it all the time with importing at least so I might try and get in touch with one.

id probly look at taking the firearm to Namibia ,with you from nz, then shipping from Namibia back home while you enjoy ,Europe.
maybe your travel agent ,would be the first place to ask about this , or new Zealand ,border protetction ?
hope you get it sorted ......
if l was going to ship my firearm , from Namibia ,home while out adventuring elsewhere id give the last of the ammo away after the hunt.
don't know of , or if you even can but perhaps , you could leave the firearm with the outfit/p.h, and look at getting it exported in your crate , with dip and pack /taxidermy ????

I'm almost dead certain you won't be able to ship firearms with taxidermy goods.

I don't know that you could , either enysee.
but has anyone look into it ?
they pack 100s of different items into a shipping container .that's going to the same destination .
just a thought ......;)

Guns are potential weapons of war, they are always looked at different.

I am sure Eric is right, no way that could happen. Imagine the looks on the faces of first, the receiver in the states when he opens a crate of skins to find a rifle in there! Then the customs BP guys come around and oh boy are we gonna have fun today!! As far as shipping the gun ahead, I asked Annelise at Afton guest house and she said they had a client do it one time and it cost him a fortune and still had to do the SAPS there anyway. I am totally sympathetic to the idea having had a lot of hassles on my last trip with all agencies except SAPS! Our CBP, the airlines, Port cops etc., it was awful! I wish I could take a transporter like in Star Trek to Africa with all my stuff and to hell with flying and all the miserable BS that goes with taking guns over!!!! AAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it were up to the UN only police, military and criminals would have guns.

Thanks for the replies fellas, I'll look into researching a bit more.

The UN would like all of us to ship our firearms internationally properly demilled into tiny little pieces!

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
