can any of you good people tell me about how long (how many days ) it takes wired money from U.S. bank to S.A. bank ? I wired money to my export agent a week ago today. I am getting concerned. Thanks Forrest

Forrest,

I wired money and it was there the next day. I asked them what day it would show up and it was on time. I also sent an e mail to the party telling them the money was on the way and to check and let me know it arrived. Reason for this was the last time it took the business 4 months to confirm that they received the money and only after i had my bank check on the date of transfer and deposit. (when it cleared) We doubled checked that the money was wired to the correct account. Also, You should have a record of the transfer, have your bank check to see when it cleared, my bank sent me an e mail, however i asked them to do it.

Also our government, check on any over seas wire transfer to make sure that they are legit. I had to answer 2 pages of questions before i could send the funds by wire transfer.

time wise, I did my transfer the last week of August.

I have seen wire take anywhere from 2 to 10 business days.

Thanks. yes I contacted the export company, told them the money had been wired, they told me they would contact as soon as they recieved the money. ( the next day was a holiday in S.A.) like Jerome said could take up to 10 days. Forrest

If you wire during East Coast US banking hours, it goes out the same day and is received the same day at the receiving bank. Where you run into problems is the receiving bank not posting it right away to their customers account. Why? Simple - the receiving bank plays the float. There is no way that it takes 10 days for the wire to "clear". It is a wire. It is sent through the US Federa Reserve System. The dollars, when received at the other end, are immediately available. That is why they call it a wire. The receiving banks muck around before posting it to the customers account.

from Australia , it takes 3 days , 4 tops, to either Africa or Canada, in my limited experience .
like james said email the reciepiant as soon as the wire is done .
as the banks in some places like to hold on to the bucks for as long as they can

I live in GMT -6 (CTZ). In wiring money out of the country going east, my experience is, if given to the bank prior to about 10:00am it is normally received in about two days. After noon usually adds another day.

Have your bank email you a wire confirmation number. You can then email the confirmation number to the recipient. That way the recipient can verify with his bank the wire has been received and the bank doesn't get to play the float with your money as blackdog001 mentioned.

All the best.

I've had it take from 2 days to 2 weeks, I prefer to deal with shippers and taxidermists that take Visa and just charge me the 3% transaction fee or whatever the going rate is. On 2 hunts the outfitters were able to take paypal for the deposits, thats so convenient and cheaper. I just sent a wire to a dip and pack outfit in limpopo it cost 40 bucks which was about 10% of the total. My bank also told me that if a wire trasfer was intercepted to SA that there was no recource and I would just be out the money due to increased wire fraud they no longer gauranteed wire transfers to some over seas destinations.

I have used credit cards to take care of business over there! It was easy that way.

A couple years ago I had a wire sent to a guy in my state for a piece of machinery I was sending a truck to pick up. Less than 100 miles away and he claimed he never got it, called all pissed off, threatened me, etc. We called his bank, they were rude (as well as stupid) and threatening as well (good thing that does not work on me too well ;)..... Had our bank track it down... Turns out it was at the receiving bank the whole time... They screwed up on their end, it was basically sitting in their in box as I understand it... Very small town bank, I think they might have used the Wells Fargo Stagecoach the last time they did an out of town money transfer... Never even got an apology.

The last wire we did was to book our November hunt.. The outfitter has a US Bank account.... easy peasy!

I paid $50 to send a wire transfer on 1/22/2014 for my $1000 deposit (5%) and was also told that if it didn't go through I was out the money as well. It seemed like it took a week, but a quick check of the e-mail shows that it took less than 48 hours.

I would gladly pay the 3% surcharge for a credit charge next time to have an immediate confimation and SIGNIFICANTLY less risk of fraud.

Hi Kathy

It can take anything between 2 to 15 working days, depending on who has to complete the transaction.
From the US I normally wait about 3 days, I have had problems from Europe where I waited almost a month.

The best thing to do is to have a reference number and call the bank every second day.

I wired my PH in SA from the U.S., PNC bank and he emailed me a thank you. The next day it was in his account.

the export agent is SBS logistics. she said she would email me when they recieved the wire deposit. but they didn't. I ended up emailed them and she said they recieved it about 3 days after it was wired. the trophies were supposed to ship 4 oct didn't happen. someone forgot to put one of the kudu on the export permit. she said it would be a few days. emailed her on 22 oct she said we are busy finding out where amended permit is. as soon as we recieve the permit I will let you no. Forrest

Good luck Forest.

last time that happen to me it was 4 month later and i had to have my PH go and visit the shop to find the shipment so it could be sent...

I know there are probably hundreds of trophy shipments out of SA but fiascos by the shippers seem like they are becoming a recurring theme. I endured a month long hassle getting mine.

We have wired money about 5 times to Bank of Windhoek, Namibia and have had no problem - money arrived reliably in a couple of days.

As for the costs - we recently made payments to the taxidermist we are using in Namibia of almost exactly the same $US amount using wire transfer and credit card .
  • Wire fee: $70 US
  • VISA Credit Card fee: $150 US for an international processing fee
    • We do get 1% back from our credit card purchases.
    • We also get some fraud and warranty protection if we use VISA
Using the credit card was a bit of a hassle though:
  1. I call VISA to tell them that a charge was coming and from whom.
  2. VISA refuses to do anything in advance - they say a charge must be made first.
  3. Taxidermist makes the charge and notifies us that the charge was declined.
  4. I call VISA again - VISA acknowledges the declined charge
    1. This time they are willing to temporarily lift the "travel ban".
    2. I ask them to lift it for 2 days.
    3. VISA tells me they had me on their list to call to verify the declined charge but they just had not gotten to it yet.
  5. I notify the taxidermist that they should immediately retry the charge as they have 48 hours to do so.
  6. Taxidermist makes the same charge a 2nd time - that time the charge goes through.

yes it has been 21 days since the trophies were supposed to be shipped. shure does take a long time to do paper work in S.A. I thought a few days ment 3 to5 days not weeks. Forrest
