Hello everyone, I just wanted to post about a new rifle with a very special story with it. Recently my grandfather passed away very unexpectedly and he was a gun enthusiast. We talked about hunting in africa now and then, he knew that it has been a dream of mine for quite some time. After he passed, my family and I were getting his affairs in order and long story short he provided me with a brand new weatherby vanguard s2 with a nice wood stock chambered in 300 weatherby mag. I believe it was intended to be a college graduation gift. Once I am able to go to africa after college, that will be the first rifle I take with me and it will be very special and meaningful to take one first safari. I just got a great deal on a zeiss terra 4-12x42 with the rz8 reticle that I'll be putting on it in as soon as it arrives. I will post pictures when everything is mounted and ready to go.

That is very true, it'll be one of those rifles I have my whole life. I look forward to using that caliber in the field

That's a great story. The cool thing is that you'll be able to take that rifle to Africa and someday pass it down to your children/grand children.

I inherited a Stevens double barrel 16 gauge from my grandfather. He never really took care of it, for him it was just a cheap shotgun he used for varmints. But I fixed it up a bit and it's now something I really cherish.

You are exactly right, it'll be passed down for generations. That's a great looking shotgun! The guns with sentimental value are always the best

that's a special gift V/R.
,one you are destined to use in Africa.
gotta love an old guy with forethought

That's awesome VR, the old bull must have thought the world of you!
My ex's grandmother was a wonderful woman, I used to take her to the range with me and she enjoyed it so much. She passed away in May several years back and I felt like I did when my own grandmothers had passed. At Christmas that year I received a present of a finely crafted hunting knife that she had custom made for me before her death. I'll tell ya this tough sumbitch got something in his eyes that made them water that Christmas.

That is PRICELESS....

Can't wait to hear about you taking that first African animal with that rifle. Just don't get tears on it. Don't want it to rust. :)

Yea we were very close, he was a tough old guy that's for sure. The things he has done for myself and my family throughout the years I couldn't repay his kindness in 100 lifetimes. Wow that's a great story bullthrower338! I definitely was choked up that's for sure. I'm very excited to take it to africa royal27, it will be an emotional hunt that's for sure!

Voodooracer, thats great, hope you can use the rifle as its intended.

Its a shame all kids don't get to experience their grandparents as some do. I did, mine were great on both sides of the family, though my moms dad didn't think much of us, my dads dad made up for it. Both grandmas were great people and I really miss them sometimes. My own parents were great parents but not as good in the grandparent dept, largely due their age, my kids didn't get to enjoy them as much as they might have and my folks are both gone now. Afraid I will be one of the older ones as well as I didn't have kids until later in life. Here I am 61 and my boy is only 17. My daughter is nearly 23 now and no husband, so who knows when grand kids come along. Oh well, life happens.

I definitely will! You Are very right, not many do get to

Voodooracer,

If every Grandfather was as squared away as yours, this old world would likely not be in quite so deep the mess that it's in today.

Velo Dog.

Thanks for sharing this with us. A special rifle from a special man. Tough to beat that!

You are very right Velo Dog, the world would be a much better place if that were the case! You are welcome tarbe! I really appreciate everyone's kind words! My scope should be here tomorrow for it so I'll upload some pictures of it and do a range report this weekend when I get to the range

I am just getting back from the range and got a chance to shoot the weatherby. Things went okay, I need to look into a couple things as it wasn't grouping as consistently as I had hoped, it was quite cold here today and a bit windy so that could have something to do with it. Or it could be me not doing my job but who knows haha. Hopefully I can get back out soon and do a little more tweaking on it! Here are some pictures of it

How is the trigger in your rifle? My boss just brought me his sons vanguard 7mm RM and that trigger is as rough as Hillery Clinton's face! I worked on it for several hours and finally ordered a Timney from Midway, that will definately fix it. I couldn't wring any groups better than 1-1/2 out of it with that factory trigger.

The trigger wasn't bad at all, not the worst trigger I have used. I've lucked out on my 2 weatherby's as they have had pretty nice triggers. That's unfortunate to hear!

My 30-378 has a very good trigger, this one I'm working on surprised the heck out of me. It is an older vanguard and I have read it wasn't uncommon to get a bad trigger, they evidently have remedied this in their S2 rifles. New trigger should be here Monday!
