I am headed to RSA early next week and have my wife joining me a week later. I have not been too worried about any of the Ebola stuff because it is centered mostly 3500 miles away in Liberia and we are on a non-stop flight from Atlanta. However, my wife is getting nervous about it now and so I am trying to explain that there are more ebola cases now in Texas (Dallas is 200 miles from us) than in South Africa. In light of that fact, our main concern is on the flight over there and back coming in contanct with someone stricken with Ebola. Are there many flights coming from Liberia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, etc that go to Jo-'burg where a person may get off and join our flight back to Atlanta? My guess would be that most likely someone escaping the Ebola region would get on the flight from Lagos to Atlanta or a connection through Europe, etc. What do you guys think? Guys that are in RSA, is there as much talk about Ebola there as there is here in the US?

BTW: I am super excited about my trip. This is my second trip to Africa. It makes it extrememly hard to focus on work, etc when all I want to do is pack for my trip and read up on the AH forum. Thanks!

The food they serve you on plane should kill any Ebola for sure.....take plenty of snacks. Should be fine.

Like you said, 3500 miles away. The closest you will be to Ebola will be when you are in Atlanta as Dallas is less than 1000 miles. Point being, enjoy the trip,!

if your that worried mate , I will do you the favour of going in your place , if l get ebola you will know that you made the right decision .
if lm lucky enough to escape unscathed . I will let you have a copy of the photos I take , and you can even foot the taxidermy bill , to help you feel better .;);):p:p

don't worry to much about it , bloke .
its common knowledge that south Africa is out of harms way , at present any rate.....
I understand your concern with connecting flights from other countries .
mate you and your cook worry more about , the fantastic adventure you are about to embark on . and the new friends you will most definitely make .
enjoy your trip

and don't forget to do a kickass hunting story/ report ,with heaps of photos on your safe return

No concerns at all, I have a lot of friends brainwashed by the media. I have never taken one malaria pill or gotten any shots in preparation for hunting Southern Africa. It is very safe!

Agree, you're probably safer in East Africa or RSA than in the U.S. right now. Enjoy your hunt. Now six months from now if they don't get this under control, not sure where you'll be safe.

Thanks guys. Just to be clear, I am not too worried at this point just looking for a little more "ammo" to help quell my wife's concerns.

I agree that I think it is asinine that the U.S. has not limited travel to/from the hot zone yet.

As the others have said, take some good snacks for going and your return flight.

My wife had the same concerns when we were traveling in August..

Take along some hand wipes, just to be on the safe side we did

We just got back a month ago and we were in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. The topic came up a few times around the camp fire. I personally never felt I was in a circumstance where I should have been worried about it. The owners of the camp and the PH's showed little to no concern at the time we were there. The only place I wondered about was at the JHB airport. We too took the direct flight from Atlanta. We took disinfecting wipes with us and use the same in the airport bathrooms just to be safe. It appears the few individuals trying to get out of Liberia so far are going through Europe and the Middle East on flights with layovers. I did see some people going through some health screening in the customs area but I am not sure why. Enjoy your trip. A year from now may be a different story if they don't get a handle on this soon.

EBOLA is a 3rd world disease, spread by un-educated individuals and non existant health care facilities. You need to be in direct contact with FACAES ,(Human crap ) blood, sweat. TO CONTRACT THIS DISEASE.

So if you're not going to lick a sick African, your safe. All westerners infected have been actively working in over crowded underfunded W.H.O TENTS.

West Africa is the height of squalor and has MILLIONS of inhabitants mostly very poor but only 5000+ have been infected ?

Europe is closer to west Africa than South Africa , are you concerned to go to Madrid or Paris ? They are 1000+ km closer to the outbreak than Cape town is !

This is a media Hype that is going to KILL AFRICAN TOURISM.

South Africa and Southern Africa have no cases of Ebola and have much better medical facilities than West Africa.

YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY SAFE TO COME TO SOUTH AFRICA.

I agree with your conclusion (go to RSA).....but......you do know that one of the health care workers in Dallas that was treating our "guest" has now tested positive for Ebola, right?

This happened here, in the 1st world.

Make me wonder how foolish we can be here in the "1st world", thinking we are so smart.

True,
BUT if this is so contagious though ,then why did NOT 1 of the passengers traveling with the sick Texas gent got infected. 16hrs on a plane with an Ebola victim and nothing.

Only health workers have been infected, I don't think it's going to get out of control. This is a teething problem to dealing with the disease.

Only time will tell and I pray for all our sakes I'm right but I think this is a mole hill being turned into a mountain

I think we are all hoping you are right!

I mostly agree with the above but not all of it. Going to RSA you will be fine I should think. If your return flight stops at Dakar Senegal as they often do, I would not be happy about that, because people get on that flight from WEST AFRICA to go to the states. Like to sit next to someone from an infected area for the rest of the flight? If they sneeze on you it may be enough to infect you, if you get whatever spray is ejected into your eyes or nose. Many docs here are now saying that despite a post above, you do not have to come in direct contact with someone's crap to get this. The problem here is the same as it often is. We don't know what we don't know about Ebola! To simply say that this or that is fact is simply ignorance. We don't know everything about this. Now of course its true that many more people will die from the flu this year than ebola. But the flu can be prevented and treated rather well. In America there is no excuse for dying of the flu anymore. I hate to sound like a fearmongerer , but hearing so many casual opinions about something as deadly as this sort of bothers me. My wife is a registered nurse of some 30 years experience and I don't hear her or her fellow nurses talking about this in such cavalier fashion. I agree that this will likely not become an epidemic or pandemic, but it could happen, especially if people don't take it seriously.

I'm a paramedic for a company with miners in West Africa.

All the health workers who have contracted Ebola breached basic hygiene protocols, including the worker in Dallas. As stated, transmission is by direct contact with fluids or a deceased victim. The virus is extremely fragile outside the human body and won't survive a trip across a room in droplet form. The common flu is a lot more resilient and far more infectious.

I see a lot of uneducated and miss informed opinions being spread across forums, primarily from North America where this whole ebola paranoia has taken a firm hold. If you are going to post about Ebola without educating yourself then your just Trolling the forums.

Well I don't consider myself as "trolling the forums"! Or uninformed! Note what I said above. My wife is a nurse of 30 years experience! I don't understand what it is that makes people so willing to take the word of every tom, dick and harry so readily! Code4, you said it yourself - fluids!! Saliva is a fluid! Direct contact can be the result of shaking hands with a person who just coughed or sneezed into their hand! In short this can be transmitted in much the same way as the common cold, and that's not me saying that, its more than a few doctors and the CDC! BTW, the director of the CDC who yesterday stated that the nurse in Dallas "breached protocol", today apologized for that. Its what we don't know about this that makes it dangerous. To just run around saying don't worry, be happy is irresponsible at this point. I agree once again that its unlikely to become a worldwide pandemic, but until we know more about it, caution should be exercised by all. What's wrong with being careful?

I was getting ready this week to book a leopard plains game hunt in Namibia for '16. But at this rate, there may be some real bargain deals within the next few months! :)

Yep, I trust the Guardian, I trust all popular media and I trust research scientists looking for recognition and funds.
