Bagging Baboons

My advice for baboons is be patient! 99% of the time you get the big cocky male that struts out last. With a serious attitude. I only shot 5 this holiday but we have a thousand more. The one of me holding that large male upside down is proof of my theory. I actually shot him off the back porch while I was having my morning coffee, hence the slippers!! My wife told me later she laughed as I came tearing through the lounge in just my slippers and shorts with a rifle screaming "The B****s are in the veggie garden!"
You know its incredible @BRICKBURN you can drive past the baboons 20 times and they wont run away, you fetch your rifle and hide it under the seat of the bakkie....you won't get within 100 metres of them before they start running for the mountains. That's why I enjoy baboons, they are incredibly smart.
p.s. My border collie is actually useless and in no way participates in the hunt.

Never had a chance to shoot one, but it´s certainly on my list !

I asked the PH about hunting them and he said they bait them with oranges. I plan to bring my 243 with a warm load and Berger 87gr.

Jono, are you using the baboons as bait for the bushpig? Seems a reasonable way of recycling them :)

I wouldn't mind taking a couple of three hundred yard shots at these mugs! Saw some on my last trip but did not have them on my list. Maybe the next trip.

Had lots of shots at those stinking baboons in the Save 2 trips ago. I lost count how many I killed. Every time one said "yahoo - yahoo" the ph said shoot that one! I finally asked why and how much this was costing me and he just smiled. Said he was having a leopard hunter in the next week and told me it would take the troup a week or so to sort out a new leader. I still haven't seen a bill for them yet.

Great story about the oranges. The ph showed me when he catches a snake he buries it it the riverbank by the lodge with a string attached to an orange on top of the sand. When the baboon grabs the orange the snake pops out of the sand and the baboons go nuts! The next day they run by an orange and flick it to see if anything is attached. They do learn fast! Absolutely hilarious to watch!

K-man i know what you mean by not getting charged for these critters. my PH already told me if i shoot any they are free. apparently the babboons have been causing all kinds of damage to the hunting lodge.

Good afternoon @Sika98k actually I do use the baboons as bait. In the trail cam photos of the bushpig they are actually feeding on a baboon. I just open up the chest cavity, leave the flies and bugs to break it all down and after about 4 days when it smells terrible is when the bushpig move in.

Next time I get out there I will ensure there are baboons in the area and bring my 22/250 as well. Some long range shooting at these would be a bit of sport.

I have a sleek 22-250 too that I think would be heavenly in baboon country.

I hope to lose some sleep next May while chasing around lo0king for baboons at 0-dark-thirty.

Oh yeah baby! Only cost a little sleep and about 90 cents per round (shooting the TTSX)!

You just had to get in a dig about the price of reloaded TTSX knowing I still pay full retail, didn't you??? ;)

Just trying to give you further incentive!

Remember: you won't save money...but you'll get to shoot a whole lot more!
