I've lurked in this forum for a long time but never joined.

I've wanted to hunt Africa since I was knee high to a grasshopper.
I grew up in the north of England and grew up hunting. With a catapult (slingshot) at first, then an air rifle, shotgun and .22lr.
Started deer stalking but never bought a rifle for the job, always used the PH's rifle.

Well that's all changed, I get my new rifle in November and Africa will be 2016 job permitting.
So now I'm on here to offer any help I can and glean a little from the more experienced members.

Glad to be here and thanks for having me.

Jimbob

Jimbob,

Welcome from Anchorage, Alaska.
What make and caliber is your new rifle?
If you do not already have a Safari Company / PH selected for your first Africa trip, you must not miss the section here in the Forum which is entitled - "Deals" - (located at the top of the Home Page).

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Welcome!!!

You've come to the right place! Ask a lot of questions and like Velo said check out the deals section. There are a lot of AWESOME outfitters on this site.

Holler if you need anything!

Cheers lads. Nothing selected as yet. I want a Blue Wildebeest and NEED a zebra and me and our lass are having a holiday afterwards.
So wherever we pick it'll have t be girlfriend friendly whilst I'm out.
I'll definitely check the deals section once we know.

It's a Uberti High Wall in 45-120. I'm a fan of single shots, open sights and big bores so she'll work nicely.
Should be enough for anything I can afford.
Plus I've been approved for it for UK game which is pretty much unheard of!

gday jimbob.
welcome to AH ,enjoy the site ,mate.
theres many girlfriend friendly , outfitter on here .
and some of them will go right out of there way to make sure the missus ,is well catered for
with many outside hunting activities .

A Uberti High Wall, in .45-120 !
Excellent.
That should prove to be very effective on the species you mentioned plus, it seems like it would be real good for even huge eland, if you decided to sack one with it.
I too am fond of the older designs, including single shots (among others).
Once upon a time I had a Uberti re-make of the Sharps 13 pound target rifle, part octagon / part round, 34" barrel, set triggers, in caliber .45-70 and it was a fine rifle (sold it to help pay off one of my safaris).
I have wondered why the original High Wall, the Rolling Block and the Sharps Falling Block did not catch on in Old Africa.
Seems like any of those would have been real good/sturdy/powerful and accurate, for use by Explorers and Adventurers of all sorts, back in those times.
I look forward to hearing how this all works out with: - "The .45-120 on Safari" - in some 2016 or other future posting.

Cheers Velo Dog.
Should do me nicely and there is nothing quite like a big bullet to get the job done. I have enclosed a phot of my gun in the shop. The brown finish on the barrel is from the previous owner, not sure if it'll stay, looks too much like rust!
Loaded up to 40ksi (which the uberti's easily handle) it rivals 450NE so could take Big 5 technically. Although that's a distant dream.

You would have thought they would have been more popular but bolt guns from the war and heavy doubles were preeminent at the time so I imagine changing that trend would be nigh on impossible. Much like the whizz bang stuff of today.

I do like the older stuff and, to be honest, I've wanted to hunt Africa with a single shot since I learnt about Frederick Selous!
Regards,
Jimbob

For large/heavy animal .. Use large/heavy bullet.
Who can't connect those simple dots?

Welcome to AH Jim Bob :)

Your rifle should be fine for a great number of African game animals. (y)

Welcome to the forum, Jimbob. You certainly joined the correct forum to start your planning.

Cheers,

hi welcome to AH. thats great but how did you manage that ?

Welcome to AH Jimbob! Nice to have you with us!

Welcome to AH, Jimbob !

To be honest I did think they'd say no. I applied for 458 Win Mag with the justification that it can be downloaded to 45-70 levels easily.
I spoke to the head shed at Firearms Licensing HQ and he said that unfortunately they base it on Cartridges Of The World, regardless of if it can be reduced (or increased) in energy.

As I expected him to say no, I had a few options in my head t mention when he rang. He opened up the book, we discussed it and 45-120 is listed at 2000 ft-lbs which is .243 energy.
So he agreed to it with no hesitation. The reasoning I used was that heavy, slow bullets cause less meat damage compared with fast calibers of equal energy.

The problem now is that I'll have to get all land approved for .45 since most is only approved up to .308 and I don't have an open license.

Welcome onboard Jimbob!
