Airfares for May 2015

Last time I went thru UK was in 1990 and back then it was nothing. It has gotten a bit harrier since that time. Just like here, the secret then I guess is partnered airlines and no airport changes etc. So really no worse than going thru JFK right?? I wont do this again unless the airlines like each other and will transfer the guns automatically. Its a royal PITA if they don't!

I just do it the easy way no stress at all.Call lori and let her know when and were I want to be.She has always save me money over all the other places that book flights.Always have time between flights and get the best direct route to SA.I am near jfk which makes it easy route wise.
I just dont trust the discount airfare places or a business were you can not talk with someone with out 30 minutes of talking with a computer.
She told me 4 years ago if I want to save money going to SA book in april, may or early june. Then again in sept or oct as the rates come back down from mid june ,july and aug.

I booked it through Lori if you read my original post again. Airfares change quickly and if you're not keeping track regularly, you can miss good deals. It takes only a moment to hop on Orbitz or the other travel sites to see what's going on. Personally I'd much rather do that then be continuously calling Lori or any other travel agent just to check.

Once you find the price you're happy with then book it through your favorite agent.

I don't think it's as bad as JFK with the Port Authority, you just deal with BA employees.

I did see that just saying what I like to do really.
Found in the end I have never really saved more then what see got me from the first time talking with her.I make one call and let her do her thing and get the email when she found me the best deal.
Just trying to let people know they can trust her to find the best deal with them not needing to watch themselves.

What spike said ses. Issues arise in the UK when you are mixing airlines and worse if you change airports. London has both Gatwick and Heathrow. Somewhere along the line I read about someone who had to change airports, I don't think it was by choice, and it gets to be a nightmare there. Gatwick is a pretty good drive from Heathrow and thus the guns had to be transported by car with someone approved to do so. Don't even want to think about it.

As long as your flying BA into and out of Heathrow, my understanding is it's a piece of cake. In fact, I know Mark Young prefers this route as BA has employees specifically making sure such baggage is handled properly and not just by your average baggage goon.

yup phil the security company used by BA collects the gun cases and stores them till its time to load them onto the next flight, and then they take them to the plane. the only time you would need to transfer to gatwick was if you were going to another european country as BA uses gatwick more for those destinations but not all, and you can still have a through ticket, but would need a firearms courier to transport you and your guns between the two airports. using one of those companies isnt actually too bad or complicated as you give them the info and they get all the paperwork and deal with customs for you and help with checking in.

I think the horror story I read concerned someone who ended up at Gatwick when they weren't supposed to. Not sure anymore as that was a few years ago, but it was a mess. Seemed like the guy ended up several hundred dollars poorer when it was said and done.

Gotcha. It's probably a bit easier with JFK being your home airport to do it that way. And as mentioned I'm a control freak, have found too many times in my life if I don't take charge of things, I end up sorry.

Not meant to be a criticism of Lori or any other travel agent, it's just how I am. A recent home sale and purchase of another has only caused that characteristic to grow stronger with the number of issues that occurred in that process.

yeah phil they aint cheap but it works. we have to use them when i used to take rifles down for finn , as we only have flights from jersey to gatwick and not heathrow, but now i have bought him a .22lr and a .270 down in zambia, so unless he wants to use one of his nice rifles specially we dont have to take any now .:)

a perfect price.
My experience with sporting guns and BA is absolute good.
(I call them always Sporting Guns; I would never go hunting :) )
Ideal is a take down gun, with a short gun suitcase and a big treble clef outsinde.
Lots of antihunters in the airports in Europe
But the problem is often a strike by the british.
And important: make a gun insurance-Heathrow is a Bermuda triangle for weapons.
all the best

foxi they are classified as sporting weapons by BA themselves as their other classification is weapon of war and you aint going to get them on the plane unless you are on an overseas trip sponsored by the govnt ;) BA has section 5 carriers licence which handguns and semiauto centrefire rifles come under in uk i.e. prohibited for most people.......and will carry them i think with special notice, and them not being illegal in the destination country. not sure about the strike thing unless you are talking about the 1970/80s as now you have more chance of the french or spanish air traffic controllers causing problems. your guns should be insured regardless of where you are travelling through, and as i said these days there is strict security for firearms at heathrow and unlike the old days when heathrow was nicknamed thiefrow the security staff and not the baggage handlers transfer/look after the guncases.

Great price indeed . I was told could only book 6 mo out so I paid 2233. each for 2 tickets DFW/IAD/JNB/ELS. Went in July.

Well that may not been too bad, prices go up after June 1st and you made it to ELS (not sure which airport that is).

Good morning Spike,
when you book in Germany, they make often a difference between Jagdwaffen/huntinggun (shooting gun-shooting is in England that what we mean ,hunting mean the english by horse and hounds) and Sportgeräte(sporting goods) .
In most cases, sporting goods are free for transport ,round 20kg.But not always and with a hard core line like Lufthansa, you can have discussions.
Airlines and gun transport-it could be a own thread.
Don't bluff you with the strikes in GB.I'dont ment the big strikes in the Thatcher area and before.
Sometimes I think, thats a special hobby there (and in Italy).

I pain $1900 to fly from MKE to ATL to JNB, no stop in Dakar....I would have been super happy if it wasn't for the damaged gun case and continued non payment of the gun case

But I think $1300 is a HELL OF A DEAL

$1300 is a smoking deal! I just dropped 2K on my tix. My problem is that I live in Fargo, ND and flights always cost more from here. I could have flown a few hundred cheaper but did not care to go through Dakar again.

I've heard of issues going thru London before with those carrying firarms. Personally, I'd just as soon get on in Atlanta and get it over with without the stop in Europe or Dakar. Did the Dakar thing once and that was enough for me.

Having said that, $1300 round trip could make a stop in Europe potentially tolerable.

I got lucky for this time frame myself. I doing it out of memory but it was like $1325 from Atlanta to Port Elizabeth. Booked through Lori as well. Didn't do that for my first trip and it cost me money.... Live, learn, and take advice from africahunting.com! ;)
