I've sat and watched this boy for hours...and then come the coward scum bastards.

Hi Doc,

I read about this earlier on Facebook.

It appears that the lions were being hunted by the village, for the lion to have been killed at Noon-ish.

So were were the individuals tracking this lion and pride when this occurred.

If these lions were causing issues there should have been a report filed.

Short sighted dumb asses.

Sorry for my ignorance but I am not sure what to make of this: does the local population reject the conservation efforts as it poses a threat? Or have those responsible for monitoring this lion failed to ensure the local population is safe? The carcass does not seem to be disturbed so whomever killed him seems to have only done it to get rid of him.

TIA...........sad

I have tried to explain wildlife management many times.................

If it posed a threat they can call MET and have it dealt with.
Some dip sh*t rejected conservation.

The population was being studied, not monitored for protection.

Sad that DOC was not watching for a couple of hours at this particular time.

..mate, you can't see it, but you can bet your bottom dollar that his balls were cut off for some bullshit voodoo muti 'tough guy' ritual..

I read this report and the horror about the elephants yesterday. I am left saddened and shocked by the reality of these murders. But I am also very (words fail me; angry, frustrated, depressed?) that the shrill preachings from many of the popular conservation groups drowns out the message that should be delivered! I see the hard work people like Sable 123 put into planning an environment suitable for the animals. I read the true conviction to the welfare of wildlife espoused by those on this forum.

I don't know what I am rambling about other than to say I wish more people with an interest in conservation would sign up here on AH. Even if you do not hunt you will get a real education about wildlife management and the politics of conservation. The reality is much more overwhelming than I imagined.

This kind of crap will lead to less and less hunting. It's a shame the uneducated and uninformed waste wildlife like this animal........for what?

Sad story, but as Enysse said, TIA.........

Endangered Kunene lion killed
by Theresia Tjihenuna

A RARE male desert lion that has been a valuable source of information for a lion research project in the Kunene Region was killed over the past weekend.

The lion, which was called the ‘Terrace Male’, was found dead near Tomakas, a village between Purros and Sesfontein, on Sunday, it was reported on the website of the Desert Lion Conservation Project yesterday. The satellite collar with which the lion had been fitted to record its movements was found burnt about 100 metres from the animal’s carcass. The collar last transmitted data on the animal’s whereabouts at 12h33 on Sunday.

The Terrace Male, which was given the research title ‘Xpl-68’, was with a pride of lionesses from the Okongwe area south-east of Purros when he was killed. Lion researcher Flip Stander, who started the Desert Lion Conservation Project in 1998, said that data from their satellite collars showed that the Okongwe females immediately moved into the northern Okongwe Mountains, possibly due to the disturbance caused by the killing of Xpl-68.

The lion’s carcass and burnt collar were found after two vehicles had been sent to the last location recorded by the Terrace Male’s satellite collar when it was noticed that the collar had stopped transmitting data. “It would appear that the people responsible for killing the Terrace Male wanted to hide the evidence,” Stander said.

The Terrace Male was born during November 2007. After being fitted with a satellite collar, the lion gained a reputation for its roaming over distances of hundreds of kilometres in Kunene. During August 2012 the Terrace Male was recorded crossing over the Kunene River from Namibia into Angola, where it spent about two weeks before returning across the river to Namibia. The killing of another male lion in the same area where the Terrace Male met his end appears to have set the stage for the killing of Xpl-68 as well.

Stander recorded on the project’s website that after the lion known as ‘Rosh’ or Xpl-73 was shot on 1 July, the Terrace Male started to explore areas previously used by Xpl-73 and the Okongwe lionesses. That, however, also brought the Terrace Male into danger, since he came into closer contact with humans and livestock.

“The Okongwe lions are well-adapted to living close to people and their livestock. They are cautious and distrustful of vehicles and people, whereas Xpl-68 is naive and oblivious to the dangers,” it was stated on the project’s website on 16 August.

In an effort to get the Terrace Male away from potential conflict with humans, he was relocated to the Hoanib River area further south of Purros in mid-July.

By the end of July, though, he had moved back to the area previously used by Xpl-73, and was in danger again. Stander said the killing of the Terrace Male was an unfortunate development because the incident could stimulate a public outcry that may question many fundamental aspects of the conservation, communal conservancy and tourism efforts in the region.

The website of the project says that the value of the unique desert lions is of great significance to the Namibian tourism industry, hence the need to ensure the long-term conservation of the lions.

Stander said the killing is being investigated.

Easy way to find the POS . This killing is very sad. Cut off all funding to the village. Monetary business with them. Any workers that work in the village. Fire them or lay them off TILL they finger who did it. Cut all $$$$ into the village that can be done by local businesses and employers even any gov. assistance they receive if any. Till the POS 's are found and jailed. it will not bring him back, nor help in a anyway to help the pride. Let loose the local population on finding the culprit pr culprits by cutting off all $$$ till they do. It won't take long for them to turn in their own.

interesting theory but naive..... please run through all the things you have mentioned, and tell me/us how they can be implemented /carried out, and by whom if applicable to anyone/business etc in each instance ....................??????????

I don't live near there, but since you do.... DON'T do anything that introduces any money into that village, Plain and Simple.
Get your business associates to do the same. Wages, goods, products, services, No money , That will put everyone in that village working for you to find them and root them out to return to the normalcy of life before this. It's all about cash flow. Don't let your money go into the village. The $$$ stream drying up will open mouths a lot quicker than a simple questioning by some government agency. If you employed any people of the village and are a PH, or operator, or all local businessman or woman that support tourism and think this is a crime against all that live in the area, lay those people of that village off, IF this TRULY is a meaningful cause for you, till the perps are named. Don't buy anything from them , nothing, nor let them use anything that is under your or your friends and their businesses control. If your government truly wishes answers then they can stop the any funding to the village until the killers are found.
Do that and I believe the ones that did it would be named in a very short time.
It all comes down to what would you and fellow business people willing to sacrifice to find them?
It may cost yourself some inconvenience. new people to hire, a change of supply or service and maybe even some $$$.
How much does the government really want to know who did it.
Get your Namibian tourist industry as a group to do the same ......or put $$$$ up or the information.
Money talks, Bu*****t walks ...... away. Not naive.

No question, money / economics can be the ultimate motivator. Just ask a politician!

There has to be more to this story!!:cautious:
