SOUTH AFRICA: Bluey & Joysies Visit With Roy & Jenny Wormald

bluey,

Just saw this. Sounds like a fantastic hunt and looking forward to the rest.

Impressive bow shooting on the lioness.

Learning a lot of vocabulary words from your report. Not sure if I'm illiterate or if I just don't know the English used in the land of Oz.

Happy for you man!

july 29 th
woke to no wind , but bloody cold , had a bite to eat , and some coffee.
grabbed a beanie and some good warm gloves . not one but 2 jackets , just to make sure .
to day we headed a fair drive from ckikwere to a place called kamala game reserve so joysie could hunt her giraffe .
we were met by the manger ,and resident p.h. and started this culd morning doing a bit of a game drive , there are some nice animals here .
we drive around for a while , looking at them , good roads run around this place ,is my first impression with an abundance of game .this wooded sloping place would be a cool place to stalk with the bow .wish l had of brought it .
we see a few giraffes about the place , and many, many animals.
a lovely stream runs through the middle aswell.
we see the light colored bull that needs to be taken from here and we get ready to walk in as hes in a very accsesable area ,we get my girl into 90 metres set up the sticks ,and she delivers a kill ing shot to the base of the neck and the big guy goes down . for this l changed bullets as l don't think the berger vld ,would've been tough enough , so joysie used barnes ttsx
we walked in and stuck another shot into his chest ,as insurance .
id hate to be kicked by any one of them big hoofs , and as funny as would be to see joysie get a boot from him , it would break her in half .
we set him for photos and then the work began .
we caped him for a pedestal mount and floor rug with the back skin ,keeping his shin bones to try and hang the zebra skin from . and one front and one back hoof to get book ends made from .that and a skull mount

just after lunch we arrived back at the big block where we noticed the black wildebeest were with in 300 metre of the bush so we run in from the gate , I was sure this was goin to get us much more walking this arvo ,but as we got to the last 200 metres before we may actually make this work .all was good .we slowed right down and moved gingerly from bush to bush , at 350 roy asked what bullets l had on me , both I said , good put he barnes in here . I know you like them vld s,and they are killing the animal, theres no argument there , but I dont have much faith in them .they are way to soft .which is dead true .
they only things that they have exited are the spring bok ,and mountain reed buck.
so that's not an issue . weclode the gap about another 30 metres , roy ranged them at 330 and they aren't moving very much so he put the stick up so l could take the sitting down shot . and we looked for the best bull as they all seemed to be asleep on their feet .6th from the right is a good one , but that one right in the middle is the one wait till hes clear and put it right on his shoulder .
once their was a gap he was nearly standing straight on so put the cross hair just in front of the front leg and gentley squeezed , at the shot ,they all woke up .but the smack of the barnes crunching through his chest was so much more distinct ,than the shots with the vld , he went maybe 3 steps and that was that .
chased these guys all the place yesterday ,and walked in and shot one in about 40 minutes ,today .roy said that's the way it is with these guys .

Nice job Frodo!

thanks Gandalf......
glad you like it ,mate.
its fun to relive it again .
and a lot easier since I took your little hint in another thread
about making little notes every day

You had a great time alright ! bet it was hard going fishing again . I know it takes me ages to get back into it after a few weeks away hunting .

ha ha ha , it was a laugh , I just whispered to her that I will film it . and was just switching the the little sony over to video .
when she crunched him .
mate I near took a turn . I jumped and tossed the bloody camera .
l reallly wasn't expecting that ,hey......
them things go down hard .

mate im stoked now . ive wanted one of these weird looking bueaties for many years .
and as we are walking back to the gate as some other dude gutted him , as denessee wouldn't let anyone else touch joysies giraffe , so he told this other fella" bootie" I think his name was to volunteer for the rest of the day tracking with us .
dennessee said to joysie that her giraffe was special because ,he had a pretty mane ( mo hawk ) and it would be an honour for him to flesh and cape it ,all by himself .
so my bride opened my pack and give him my favourite knife to keep as a thank you .
any way my and roy boy are heading back to his cruiser , laughing and joking , like it has been since about five minutes after we met .
about 100 metres of the ute , I look and then l look again .and say are you shitting me ?
l look again ,as roy says why would l be shitting you , blue .
ive stopped and pointing to a steenbuck about 150 metres away . he throws his liecas up and says 154 metres . all serious now as I try to find a rest . but just sit down and put an elbow on each knee . once im locked on to him l zoom all the way up to 20 and tell roy he isn't as big as the one in his loungeroom . but im going to shoot him .
boom , and there my little steenbuck ..........near blown in half , but he will now be a pedestal wall mount, looking at the photo now I wish I had just got the whole front half done .
as the other side of him didn't look so good .

after we took some photos of him ,l was gob smacked .

for maybe ten minutes l was in my own happy place , before l knew it we were in the ute , going to get the black w/b..
that evening at the table , roy said we must talk now bluey .
we still have tomorrow for your duiker .
or we can pack up a day early and take in some sights on the way to cape town ,do it over 2 days , instead of one long drive .

Good job bluey, great effort.

Some nice animals you got Bluey. Your wifes Giraffe is great. Sounds like you had a great time. Congrats. Bruce

thanks fellas , appreciate the comments .
my dearest wife decided for us that we would love to take the scenic route .
so we had some more of roys beers ,after jennys wonderfull blesbok strap and vegies .
squared up pour account and found I was a tad short .
as we were leaving Australia , the chick at the currency exchange ,in Sydney said in stead of carrying a stack of coins around with us , we should try this thing called a cash passport .
sounded good ,and she said it will work anywhere .
the only plsce it worked was in atm machines ,and there was a limit of 500 dollars a day on it .long story short l left it with roy ,and the next aussie , that came as we were leaving will send it to my address via snail mail once he returned .
anyay roy and jenny couldn't get it to work for them and scott and his son are now back .
and we still owed them 4 grand .
joysie transferred it on Friday ,l hope ive only just come back into phone range .
has anyone had any experience with this thing .???
come sparra fart on the 30th july
we are packed and loaded in jenny car to head to karoo taxidermy and then down to port elisibeth with a couple of stops on the way
at karroo taxidermy ,we are met by frank and his assistant ,I spose, nikita , and given a tour from start to finish of there service .
very impressive .........

then we stopped for lunch at a cheetah rehabilitation park .
and done a guided tour with some greenie girl , she was a p.i.t.a, but certainly knew a lot about all the cats there .
438.JPG

after joysies heart melted ,playing with the girl cheetah, she bought some niknaks , and we went to the addo park ,a long ways further done the track

when we next go back , we will spend a whole and night at this piece of paradise ........as we only got an hour and a half here .......................

not at all dory , im on my last shot now , its only my first trip back , be back out tomorrow night .
it only occurred to me on the last couple of days in Africa , that l still love what I do out here . atleast for another couple of trips ,ha ha ha

once we had to leave the park , we went to port Elisabeth .
met roys son inlaw ,and kids .
then went out to have a seafood dinner at a place called 'capetown fish market " the fish was pretty good ,and the beers come in half litre glasses , how good is that ,hey ?
then he dropped us off at the motel we were stating at , fifth avenue beach house .......
that was a nice place .
next morning the owner , joined us for breaky ,what a character he was , and before we left he made sure we had all his details , incase there was something we needed , before we flew out .
now that's a bloody good bloke .
30th july
we drove all day with only a few stops .....

couldny drive past this place with out a closer look.
an hour and half later , we were on the road .

these canola fields particlaery took my fancy .a way down the track roy took joysie into a huge old barn where they had it setup as a shop and coffee lounge .
man ive not seen so much shit satacked in on place for sale , every available space was full , and im mean full ,of anything from fly swatters to wood heaters ,
504.JPG

and then you guessed it we drove again this time we didn't stop until we hit capetown , only to find that the cage dive company we had booked with had cancelled , big swells and dirty water ,
that put me into depression .
any way roy waved his magic wand ,and got us on another boat ,but it was 3 hours drive back the way we just come .
so we stayed where we w ere booked at a

frican villas in hout bay .for the night and left early for the shark diving .

My Ranch is prob 60km due South of his ranch.
