Greetings,

I have been reloading for 7X57 in Ruger No.1's and M77's for a while with marginal success. I have located a Win M70 from the 1982 time line and was considering the purchase. While searching the net for details on the rifle and barrel twist rates I found this forum.

I am impressed with the level of knowledge on the 7X75 and have enjoyed reading posts as information is exchanged.

I have only scratched the surface of the information to be found here, I think. Look forward to reading and learning more.

Bill

Hello Buckeye Bill from Phoenix Phil, technically it would Chandler Phil, but that just doesn't work. Welcome to AH. I am a fairly new owner of a M70 7x57 Featherweight. It's actually for my 11 year old boy, but I do love to shoot it! I do most of my shooting at Usery Pass way out in AJ. Where do you shoot at when it's not 115 degrees?

Hello,

I think it was your post that I first found on the Winchester Mod 70 in 7x57 that inspired me to join this forum. It is hot these days. There is a range about 8 miles away on MC85 heading towards Jila Bend. It is called the Buckeye Hills Shooting Range or Joe Foss shooting range.

I found a used Mod 70 at a local shot and I am on the fence about purchasing it due to past poor performance with other 7x57 rifles. I can not seem to find a consistent sweat spot. I have lots of brass, powder, bullets and dies. I guess that I am looking for someone that has had some luck loading for a 1982 era Win.

It is nice to find another Arizonian on the forum.

The last load I worked with was using IMR4350 with 140gr North Fork Bonded Cores. IMR4350 is one of my favorite powders, but it has a habit of not working well when the temp starts getting above 90. Shy of about 5 minutes somewhere around 5am, the temp hasn't been below that for awhile now. So, I've pretty much stopped shooting and probably won't start again till October.

Hello to Buckeye Bill and Phoenix Phil. Just so happens I'm reading your post from the Chandler Hilton tonight as I'm in Phoenix on business. Don't have one of the M70 s but there will be lots of folks on here that do. Some of the members are true experts on guns of all sorts and ammunition points of interest. Keep reading and welcome!

Welcome to AH Bill! ;)

Howdy!!!

Welcome to AH Bill!

Welcome Buckeye Bill, the 7x57 is a super round, I had great success with it back when I had time to load!! Unfortunately, youth and ignorance got the best of me and I embraced the magnums and sold my 7x57. I have yet to fully return to moderate and sane cartridges.

Welcome Bill. Can't help you but sure hear positive stuff on the cartridge. As you have all the goodies, might as well stick with it and refine it. On my one and only Safari so far, my PH wanted a gun for his daughter and really liked the 6.5 Creedmoor some of his clients (including me) used but from a practical standpoint (getting ammo in Africa) was probably going to go to a 7x57. Seems to be a real standby over there.

Anyway, glad to have you aboard!

Thanks for the welcome. I am collecting my funds to make a move on this rifle. I enjoy loading for 7x57 and I am just looking for a consistent inch at 100 yards. For now I will take a look around your forum, read and learn.

Next time you're in Phoenix, give a shout ahead of time, would be happy to meet up with you!

Welcome from Alaska Buckeye Bill,

Since about age 16, I have been a fan of the 7x57, and have owned several in my lifetime.
Have had excellent accuracy with 150 and 160 grain bullets.
175 gr round nose have generally been accurate as well but not in every one that I have owned.
Currently own a Venezuelan Model 98 barreled action (23.6" stepped barrel) that I need a stock for.
Normally, I like a 4x scope on the 7x57 but am planning to have this one just as an iron sight rifle only.

Cheerio,
Velo Dog.

Welcome to AH, Bill !

Phoenix Phil I will take you up on the offer next time I'm coming out there

Welcome to AH Bill! Enjoy the site.

Welcome to AH, you are about 3 hrs north east of me, I am over by tombstone. 7x57 is a great round. I built my better half a 7x57AI on a VZ24 M98 action that is a tack driver. I have never had luck with those light feather weight barrels. but there are some really knowledgeable folks here that can give some advice on the M70's

Welcome to AH, Bill!
Could you tell me more about your findings with the M77. Why would you say your success was marginal? Could you not find a load that worked in it? Interested to hear about your findings.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen
