Hi,
Anybody suggest about Lion Hunting in Africa! (Eligibility, Procedure, Season & Budget etc)
Thanks in advance...

Contract Hartzview Safaris I would Highly Recommend them anytime and Jacques is likely to give an AH member a good break.

Hi Rambabu,

Please send me a private message I will give u all the info you need with photos and prices of our most recent lions shot last week.

Kind regards

I've just started researching the subject myself. Below is part of a message I received from a RSA outfitter. As much as I would like to hunt lion in a real wild area, I probably will not.... What is described below seems pretty reasonable to me. I don't know if it is 100% accurate for all of RSA or just what this outfitter offers.

Remember no wild lions may be hunted in South Africa anymore. The only Lions/Lioness that may be offered is Captive Bred Lion/ess that have been in an area bigger than 6000 acres for more than 30 days. That also depends on what area the hunt will take place but where we hunt them this is the norm. It does not necessarily mean the Lions were in cages all their lives, but the areas might have been smaller and trust me they are still wild and does not have or had any contact with humans what so ever.

Rambabu and Action Bob I hunted in April of this year with African Sky Safaris. Had a great hunt and took this lioness up in the Kalahari area of South Africa. Contact Andrew at Africansky.com for quotes but the price also are listed in their package deals on the site. I booked the lioness and plains game package with a couple of alterations to the plains game taken so it was a little different price. Accommodations were outstanding and I was able to hunt with the same PH I had on the first hunt I did in 2013.
Let me know if you have questions as the devil is in the details. Whatever you do and whatever outfitter you use ask lots of questions and make sure you talk voice to voice with references.
Actionbob trust me when I tell you this lioness was wild and aggressive. We were tracking her and she doubled back on us.......guess who was getting tracked then?

Thanks CAustin!

Looks like a great old cat, almost as bristled up as the hunter;) How big an area did you hunt it in? When you do a hunt like this, is it usually just the one lion in the area or are there several and you have to find the one your interested in?

Love the gun and scope. My wife has a Guide gun in 30-06 with a vx3 2.5-8... What is that in your hand? I recognize the scope. She does not have the brake on it and handles the recoil really well and does not seem to flinch. The gun really fits her well with all the stock spacers out and scope lines up naturally for her.

I've been hoping to do a lion/lioness package hunt as there are some great deals out there. Thinking maybe my wife would shoot a lioness... But when I try to inquire about lion hunting, she balks a little and then starts talking about one with a big black mane... Got a feeling I could end up with the lioness if I push her to come along too hard... Which is ok, I can man up and take it that hers could be bigger than mine.. LOL

If she does hunt lion, can she use the 30-06 or do we need to get her that same guide gun in 375 Ruger? And if we put the brake on it, will she likely be able to handle it ok?

I have a Winchester in 375 with a V6 in 2-12 illuminated. I put that scope on to have wide flexibility for plains game. Do you think it will suffice if turned down to 2x?

I had originally mounted a Trijicon 1-4 with the green triangle but I just could not shoot good groups with that triangle post. When I swapped it out, I thought I would be putting the Trijicon back on for dangerous game but that Leupold is great glass and so flexible I'm wondering if I should leave well enough alone? I shoot much more accurately with the leupold but the Trijicon is great for fast target acquisition, on 1x it can actually be used like a red dot type sight. The Leupold is certainly pretty good in that regard as well.

I originally bought the 375 and mounted the Trijicon thinking I want to work my way up to a buffalo, but to "get some blood on it" with plains game first and just get a African Safari under my belt before going for dangerous game.... Still want the Buffalo and I had intended to do that first, but now I'm worried lion hunting may close so thinking it may be wise to "get it done".

What do you think? Advise please.

Bob

ActionBob the Guide Gun is in 416 Ruger and the scope is Lupeold VX 6. You have to have a 375 or better in South Africa for dangerous game. I did a lioness plains game package and added the Cape buffalo. If you and the wife are going to take a lion and lioness you can work a deal. Be prepared to pay Big for a big old black mane male.
My lion was taken on a 22,000 acre farm. Now not all of it was lion only as there was other game on it as well. In fact I took my Oryx there. I never asked how big the area was that the lion was in but when we drove through the gate I never saw fence again until we left with the trophy. We drove around in the area for about an hour before we spotted my lioness. In short the place was big.
If your wife can take the kick from the 30-06 with no break she should be fine with the 375 or the 416. The 416 kicks about the same as my 45-70. Let her shoot your 375 and see how she does first.
I think the lion hunting could close as well. Maybe you could do lion/lioness and a buff on the same trip. Then go back another time for plains game. The VX 6 you have should give you a view area of about 120 feet across when set on 2. It will be fine. I shot my lioness with mine set on zero magnification as she was only about 75-80 yards away. The follow up shot was less than 30 yards.

Ok going from a first shot at 80 to a second at 30 sounds exciting.... You look like a pretty big guy, were you out of breath after sprinting that 50 yards to close in on her? Ha Haa

Seriously, thanks for all the info

You know at the time I didn't even think about it because my blood was pumping man! But I'm sure I was huffing a bit once we got in front of her.
It was very exciting!

There is some VERY limited quota GK area.
So, MOST lions are captive bred.

Hi RAMBABU,

As already mentioned, there are a few options with regard to African lion hunts. We do offer wild lion hunts, but the most affordable option will be a captive-bred animal that we would hunt up in the Kalahari... In my experience, these can be challenging hunts with lots of excitement and reward for the hunter. When planning this type of hunt, the main factors to consider would be the size & terrain of property being hunted, the method that will be employed to hunt the cat, and the ethics and reputation of the outfitter.

There are several very reputable operators that can offer you this kind of experience, including all of the outfitters that are sponsors here on AH.com...Please feel free to contact us if you would like more detailed information.

Most sincere regards, Dan

Hello,
Question for lion's hunters :
Is it conceivable to hunt lion with , for instance, a Marlin 1895 45-70 (Hornady 325 gr FTX) , short range shot ?
Why ? cause the 6 shots magazine, fast reload (faster than my 9.3x62 or my 70 .416RM) and a .. not so bad momentum at 50 yds or less.

Pm me as I can fill you in on all the details and look at booking you an awesome lion hunt on the Limpopo /Botswana border.

I am the US booking agent for Hunters Creek Safaris but there is no added cost to you for my services

If not looking for a captive bred hunt in RSA then I'd suggest one of the outfitters from Zimbabwe. However, depending on the concession it can be more pricey than a RSA hunt as it would involve costs for pre baiting (before arrival), baiting, and a minimum of X days of $XXXX daily rate in addition to the trophy fees. Not to mention it is not a guarantee. At the SCI show last year I had seen RSA outfitters advertising guaranteed lion specials for a 3 day hunt for $18K all inclusive.

How many lions does a hunter normally see on a SA lion hunt? I know almost all are released but are they released one at a time for incoming hunters or are several out roaming the property? Lion is a big one for me but only under the right circumstances.

There will usually be more than one lion out as they must be put out timeously as per regulation for hunters. If you hunt lion you will find different tracks crossing roads. The trackers will identify the track which you are after(male , big male or female) and that will be followed on foot.

Until this guy posts something on pay it forward free I would avoid him at all costs.

If it hasn't sold by next week I might be interested. Stock would have to be changed along with some other items. I'm already having a 416 Rigby built so money is a tad bit tight.

Hey pal! I'll take all the .375 bullets if they're available.
Thanks!
