Hi everyone, been out filming loads of hunts, but been a bit slow in posting stuff on YouTube. Here's an interesting dropshot on a Cape Kudu while filming with Jonie du Randt, Owner P/H of Omni Hunting Safaris. We hunted for 7 days before getting this nice bull. This is a true free-range kudu hunt and you have to work your butt off for a trophy of this quality. Not often you see bulls this size drop like that. Enjoy!

Here's the clip:

Very nice Kudu, and obviously a fantastic shot. Nice film as well, congrats to you (for getting this hunters moment on film) and to the hunter.

Side note: that rifle was loud considering it had a can on it.?.?

The loud rifle comes from the PH wearing a radio microphone and being right next to the hunter. Also the wind blowing directly at us. Thanks for the compliment.

Perfect video, and obviously a nice shot!

Nice shot! Good thing he started shaking afterwards, otherwise he would have seen 5 kudu instead of one. We have all been there. Great video.

Very nice on all counts.

Great shot!

The smile sez it all...

Just awesome! Here's hoping my shot at a kudu drops this beautifully.

Very nice kudu, beautiful animal, great shot!

So, was that shot high enough to involve the spine?

I never did see the bullet trace on the slow-mo.

Tim, I didn't think it was shot through the spine. I thought it looked like a lung shot, could be wrong maybe it was high shoulder shot.

I have done a number of high shoulder shots on whitetail that peripherally involve the spine/cns and they dropped like that Kudu. Not quite the pole-ax drop straight down like a direct spine shot, but pretty close!

My two cents for what it's worth. I have shot 3 kudu already and they are not hard to kill. If you hit them in the lungs they don't go far. My first one dropped just like the one in the video.

Wildebeest on the other hand, are tough, make sure you can hit something very vital or pass on the shot.

I keep reading the same thing about Zebra...tough critters too? Shoulder shot on the chevrons?

Zebra, waterbuck and eland are tough too. I follow up the front leg, look for the notch of the leg and pull the trigger. I believe about 1/3 up no more than 1/2.

Very nice film clip, thank you for sharing.

I am sure the tracker was smiling ear to ear with another on the ground and not running.

Watched it a couple time and it appeared to be a 2/3 up shoulder shot.

a lot is Depending on caliber and weight of bullet.

Call me crazy, but in my opinion when an animal drops to the shot, the next priority is to get back on the target and be ready to shoot again. Put another shot into him while he is on the ground or if you are sure of your abilities, perhaps wait for him to try to get up and then shoot. I wouldn't consider that animal secure until he has been down for a while and not moving.

There are lethal shots that drop an animal like that, but so does a high shot that hits the spinous process. If the latter, the animal will be up and off at full speed in a few seconds. Save the handshakes for later.

Great Kudu and great video. We filmed some on our own and had our PH's assistant filming on our safari, and our video has lots of flinching at shots. I want to have a better camera on a tripod next time.
