Packing ammunition for flight?

we are flying delta from atlanta to joberg. good to get all the advise, worst case i have to take a few out but I am not too worried. and on the way back it should be considerably lower, may leave the 300 win mag with my ph -- was told he had a 300.

You're just like me BD - stressing over stuff that won't matter at all in the end! I can so relate. LOL!!!

i was a little worried at first that is why i started the thread but after research and the posts here i think i am ok, so i am not going to fret it. 2 days to go and we will be in the air and the journey begins.

to say i am excited is an understatement. I have everything packed, gun case locked just have to throw the bags in the truck and head out.

I'm excited for you!!! :)

Thank you sir.

Can't wait till i can post up some trophy pictures.

Best of luck! It should be a great time of year to be there. Looking forward to seeing your pictures!

Yea I think ammo is a great gift to anybody over there who can use it.... We had nothing our PH could use so we brought it home.

I have flown Delta also on flight 200. They have just checked the guns both times and didn't even ask about the ammo in my checked bag. However, when I got home this time TSA had opened my ammo box. They left their form inside informing me ghost they had checked it. Glad I had TSA approved locks on there.

I understand the rifle case should only be open-able by me, based on much of me recent research. Is it recommended to have the TSA locks on the ammo box?

I now am wondering about that, I have a tsa lock on the bag but i have normal locks on my ammo container -- if they have to cut them they have to cut them. i have a spare set of locks in my rifle case for just that reason with a note asking them to put the new locks on.

On our last trip they cut the non-TSA locks off another passenger's ammo box (in the States). He had a flight the next morning from RSA to Mozambique, with no lock for his ammo case. I gave him my extra TSA lock for his ammo case. TSA locks for ammo cases, and have a set of spares just in case ....

Thanks for the advice. TSA locks it shall be for me!
I'm in the planning stage. Scouting plane tickets. Searching taxidermy pricing. Drooling over the hunt reports. I'm on here almost daily...

Funny.....I was just checking this evening on how much ammo all the other ladies were taking on our safari hunt this summer. I was told that the ammo had to be in their original containers and then in hard sided cases. That's what I was told the first time I hunted Africa as well. I only plan to take one box of .375 H&H and three boxes of .30-06.....so the weight limit of 11 lbs. is a non issue for me. That should be more than enough to sight in when I arrive, take the animals I plan to hunt....and leave some for my PH.

Sounds like you will be leaving 23 cartridges behind for the PH. At least from the 375. (All assuming that there are 25 cartridges taking the flight with you.)
With all the practice you have been up to lately you have now shot a 375H&H more than I ever have.

Shoot straight and have fun.
Can't wait to see what this group of hunters if going to do this trip.
Good luck.

For the first time ever I am packing my ammo in a plastic hard case from Cabelas and will have a combi lock on it. It will be in my luggage wrapped up in clothes. No one has ever asked how much my ammo weighed. I will have a TSA lock on my bag but not my rifle case. I note also that my aluminum rifle case that I have been using since 1985 is actually about 5 inches oversize in total dimensions, but again no one has ever put a tape to it and as long as its under 50 pounds, it should fly thru. If by chance some eagle eyed twerp wants to tape it, fine, I will pay the overage, big deal.

………………. If by chance some eagle eyed twerp wants to tape it, fine, …………..

I have not heard that one in a long time; Twerp. What an incredibly excellent descriptor for these people Ses. I'll have to remember that.

I made sure before my flight that my interpretation of the weight rules were on record with the airline: It is ammunition weight, not the combined weight.
I kept at it until I found someone who agreed and made sure the note was on the file.

Depends on the person you get at check in. (Which pisses me off.)

Good luck.

yesterday afternoon
at the departures for Qantas in Brisbane
was the first time ive ever had my ammo box weighed
6.1 kilos
I tried to tell the little hottie behind the desk that there was 2 knives,a gut hook , scapel, the bolt in there as well
and there was only 22 live rounds for the 300 rum and 10 for a mates ,270.
but ,that wasn't good enough so l had to open the metal box so she could see for her self .
what a night mare that turned out to be .
all got sorted out in time
im glad her and her supervisor never noticed that to 2 packs of ammunuittion were 2 different calibres ,
don't know if would've been another issue or not , but only had the pink slip for the 300.
my little wog mate wasn't their as he went home 4 days earlier

bluey, You lost the lottery that trip and got weighed.
At least your Twerp read the rules and distinguished between ammunition weight and gross container weight.
Hope the hunting was worth it.

yep, but she was the first girl I spoke to for ten or eleven days. and she sure did smell pretty
and yes the hunting was great
I will type one up, soon as l work out how to put some videos together .

Just returned from SA, first trip. Flew from a small regional airport in Illinois on a Delta Express to connect wit Delta in Atlanta. Never an inquiry regarding ammo or quantity either going to and entering SA thru SAPS or coming back, a walk in the park. I was really concerned that everything, including paperwork was correct....NO problems at all. Our PH walked us thru and 20 mins later we were out of there. US Customs inspected our rifles for serial numbers on return our boots were sprayed and sorted in a plastic bag to protect the other items in my luggage, considerate of them, thru Agriculture, and they were very good to deal with. I did have a notice that my checked bag was inspected by TSA 026 agent in Atlanta. Nothing to see, just dirty clothes and boots. TSA locks on checked bags, all else you own locks.

I hope my first trip goes as smoothly as yours did. I'm headed to SA in Sept. Did you need your own bag for boots, or did they give you bags to keep the wetness contained? Were all of your checked items checked thru to destination? This will be my first int'l travel with weapons where I didn't just have it under my seat...

We flew Delta express then Delta 200 to SA. All checked baggage was checked thru. Delta has an app for an iPhone to check you baggage is loaded on the plane. Agriculture checked the boots, sprayed and put them in plastic bags, very friendly to deal with. All toll very smooth.
