Trophy Import issues into Canada

I am pretty sure i am going to get mine tanned in SA (i will follow up on Hitch's post) and make sure that skull/horns are spotless, used TSA in 2012 and they were excellent and thats who we are going thru again this year. The only wild card here is my talking the other 6 guys into doing the same thing...... What a shi!# show, i work in the oil patch in NE Ab and i thought it was brutal dealing with the AER (used to be called ERCB) the Ab government regulator, this is about the same...:rant:

You mean the EUB, as they were called before that. How can any agency that cant even settle on a name, function. Answer- poorly at best. How about the boilers branch that just seems to want to "branch" out into areas that do not involve boilers, an area in which they certainly do not belong. I think the trend with Canadian governing agencies is that they pretty much do as they please with no one to answer to, who governs the governors?

Anyway, the skulls from Universal are beyond reproach. They are the epitome of "in display form", plus they are not over boiled and broken to crap with missing pieces. (hint hint to any dip/pack that may read this) The horns are not attached but are paired and packed very professionally.

Thxs Hitch, i will talk the others into getting the tanning done over there, i see that as the best option, as the taxidermy i want done here and i will for sure follow up with Universal. And i hear you on the regulators, as i deal with both sides of the border here and the Sask side is no different, they have changed their name as often as the AER, to me it doesnt matter if its an inspector checking a crate from Africa or an inspector up here checking an oil lease, they have about the same level of accountability, which in my books is sweet FA..... On a good note i should be getting the last of 2012 animals back from the taxidermist on the next month or so, impala, sable and kudu!!!

I just read the entire thread here; wow this is scary. Can someone clarify current status?

So the 2 options now seem to be get the taxidermy done in Africa and shipped here or have the skulls cleaned completely spotless and the hides tanned there and packed in a plastic container shipping?

It seems to make a lot of sense just to get it done there.

It seems to make a lot of sense just to get it done there.

Get your hides tanned at Universal trophy services (there may be other good tanneries but there are many poor ones and universal comes highly recommended by NA taxis) + their dip/pack is second to none so no problem once everything gets here as a finished product. Finished products are much easier to deal with right now plus tanned hides weigh less and therefore cost a bit less to ship.

You can still ship raw hides but it is getting to be a real pain in the butt and an expense you don't need IMO.

My latest batch of critters arrived in Calgary today, but I always have my taxidermy fully done in SA, so my importer feels there should be no issues at all with clearing my crate in the next 5-6 days. This includes 4 CITES animals, which is a first time for me having CITES animals in my crate.
I will let you all know how things go...

I bet you have no issues unless some bug infestation jumped into the crate.
If the permits are in place you should be laughing.

Talon Distribution handles about 80% of the trophy imports into Canada (or so they claim) and they handle all my business.
Dale Warren is the guy to talk to, he is great and makes things go very smoothly. There have been many who have cleared their own shipments and I believe it is still an option but with all the fuss lately I would recommend using a broker. Talon is based out of Edmonton but can handle shipments anywhere in the country.

I did my imports, before this new CFIA BS.
Any trophies that are completed in Africa I'll still do myself.

If you are NOT close to the airport or port of entry and have time to do it, get an import agent.

Dale is awesome. He did one import and export for my problem issue in 2011. I was impressed with their work.
He likely does 80% of Edmonton imports. He does not work elsewhere, as far as I understand.

Drop him a line and he will give you a good referral if he can not do it.

BASICS

Fully completed, clean trophies.

Prep work:
1. Learn what your Air waybill number is. You can track your crates progress.
2. Learn who the Airlines Freight Company is in Toronto.
3. Determine where your local Customs office is located. There will be a commercial office, not necessarily at the airport proper.

1. You should be informed by the Airlines Freight Handling Company when the crate arrives.
2. They should arrange for the CFIA to show up for inspection. If they do or don't, call the local CFIA Vet and see when they are showing up for inspection. You can ask them if it cleared afterward. (Saves you the drive)
3. Once inspection is completed and your shipment has passed, now comes tax time.
4. Go to the Freight Handling Office and pick up the documents.
5. Take the docs, (invoices, export permits etc. etc.) to the Customs office.
Pay your taxes, get your paper stamped, and receipt and
6. Head back to the Freight Handling Warehouse.
7. Pay them the fees required. (Handling, storage, )
8. Inspect the crate for damage and point it out.
9. Back your truck up, load up and head home.

My importer is in Calgary, and does everything I need done, does all the paperwork, customs work, sets up all the inspections I need to have done, and for the $155 that he charges to do it all quickly and smoothly for me, I sure could not be bothered.

How far do you have to drive to pick your trophies up?
If it's a two hour drive one way to get near the warehouse, I would not bother either.
