This seems to be the time of the year when the urge to return beats a little harder...Safari Banquets, cocktail events with African Outfitters, mindlessly browsing AH, etc ,etc.

My return will be for a buff, and limited PG left standif from my firstly plains game safari. I hunted South Africa and truly loved the experience, but from what I saw am not convinced that RSA would make the best destination for a buff hunt.

Mozambique is probably my "single guy" destination, but I could not leave my wife at home...and although she loved RSA...not sure swamp life would fit her.

So my question is...are there places in RSA where a proper walk and stalk on big herds of buff can be possible? I'm talking big country-where the hunt is on foot and may take several days of tracking, not driving around a game ranch looking for 1 of the 5 buffalo the may reside there.

Check out crusader safaris, they do free range no fence hunts in RSA, I have not hunted with them myself but have heard nothing but good things about them. I know they do some buffalo hunts in the greater Kruger conservatory. It's pricey but it's exactly what your looking for.

RSA may not be the best place to hunt buff due to the issues you mention and the high, very high trophy fees in most cases. A buffalo cow is another option and the fees are less.
If the truly wild hunt is what you are after, then Zim or Moz might be a better option. It all depends on your wallet and criteria. It may be that one of the outfitters here from RSA can set you up with the perfect hunt.

desertloper,

YES, there is, The Timbivati / Umbabat / letaba Ranch aera is an option...PM me if i can help!!

Like Bushwack said these hunts are available on areas open with the Kruger park, these include Balule,Umbabat,Timbavati,Letaba ranch etc.
The buffalo hunted here are more expensive but not out of line.It will be a nice place to take your wife and you can link it with a visit to the Kruger park, however the only downside is a pricescale between buffalo above #40 and below.

Like has been mentioned, certainly available. What size were you looking for? I will be more than happy to forward you more info on this.
All the best with your planning.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

At this point I'm just plotting the next excursion. Just trying to identify what can be expected and where. The hunt and shooting a good bull from a big herd, or seeing lots of big herds is more important to me than wacking a big bull next to a fence.

It is always good to do proper research and not run into surprises.A buffalo hunt on foot ,tracking herds from early morning from the waterholes will always be a wonderfull experience.Good luck on plotting the excursion you will enjoy this hunt of a lifetime when it finally happens.

The answer is YES.

E.g. this offer here http://www.africahunting.com/great-deals-hunts-worldwide/12863-timbavati-classic-buffalo-hunt-20%25-off-dip-pack.html

Best,

Big herds ? An acquaintance of mine did just what you wanted in NW Zimbabwe, however some, if not most of the outfitter there are on the International 'black' list because of association with the Zim govt.. If you don't have any issues with that, then that would be your best bet.

Your wife maybe comfortable at Vic Falls on her own, however really good accomodation there will wipe out some of the savings you make from not hunting in RSA.

Hunts like this are available in South Africa, personally I would not find a plains game safari as you mentioned or rather describe it, attractive or enjoyable not to even mention Buffalo.

Some good searching will deliver exactly what you are looking for and more.

My best always.
