Sauer 202 Forest Takedown 9.3x62 / .30-06 Combo Review

I looked at the review, I think it was well written, I could understand it perfectly. I handled a Sauer year ago in the gun shop...270 Win Mag and she was a beauty, still not cheap, but it was a standard bolt action.

I love the Sauer's safety, always have but the gun is too pricey, too heavy and accuracy & reliability on that gun at least makes it WAY OVERPRICED! I'd take Winchester, CZ or Ruger anyday for the price and reliability. You could add a fancy Zeiss scope and be set for life.
 
Thanks for a well- written and informative review. I was considering a Sauer. I also really like takedown rifles. I have a Verney-Carron Impact Plus in .270 WSM that will soon get tested by my wife on mule deer ( we hope). I also have a Browning lever rifle rebarrelled from .300 Win. mag. to .375 Ruger. I shot a cape buffalo ( perhaps the first in Africa with a BLR?) and various plainsgame in Zim. this past August. Both of these guns return to zero upon reassembly ( although my gunsmith worked his magic on each to assure this!). As you've duly noted, travelling with takedowns is a breeze compared to those " big box" cases.

Find me a Winchester, Ruger, or CZ that you can change the barrel and caliber on, without tools, while sitting on the tail gate of your truck, and not lose zero on the optics. That is the difference in a European take down and a standard bolt gun. It's like comparing apples and oranges. For the money you can barely touch a standard used Sauer rifle for what you can get a new in the box Ruger/Win/CZ. Much like a Mercedes Benz holds a premium over a Chevy, Ford, or Yugo.

He said in the article that it doe lose zero, unless you bang it, which is fine, I do the same thing when I make scope adjustments on scopes. I'll bag the scope with cloth covering it, to make sure the scope adjusts...and not just after the shot.
It's a HEAVY GUN, not that I don't mind heavy guns, I usually shoot them well. It's just that carrying them around gets old, especially if you were chamois hunting???
An why would I want to spend $6000+ for a 30-06, I can buy an EXCELLENT bolt action for $650, are you saying the gun is worth 10X the amount. Sorry don't see it.
I guess if you want to compare it to my Ford F150 4x4 to Dodge Charger from 1968 to 1970 with every gadget and option, Yes I can see the difference would love to have the Charger in the garage. A fancy gun that if not even a double for over $6000 nope not really.

no doubting you can buy all sorts of great bolt guns for $650-00 or less, but the original post was about take down rifles and the smaller size of case they would then fit in for travelling, and unfortunately you arent going to get a good take down rifle for anywhere near that price. :)

Ok, that is a good point, I'll agree, I admire takedown rifles, just not the costs :). :beer:

yup i do as well. i knew someone who had rigbys build him a replica of their .275 take down rifle of which very few were made. they had to go back and look through their old papers to see how it was done as it was a very long time ago since any were built. it was a beautiful little rifle , but he only kept it for a bit and sold it :doh2: no accounting for some people!!! i keep looking at the steyr-mannlicher take downs that come up for auction in the uk from time to time, and maybe one day................
 
Spike you are spot on, comparing a Ruger/WIN/CZ to a take down Sauer, it doesn't make any sense.

Enysse you may not like the cost of a fine European rifle but in this case it does something that the named comparable rifles won't do. the Sauer 202 take down will come apart into three pieces and changes caliber when needed not to mention that the entire package will fit into a case the size of a valet. Not a bad thing when traveling in Africa or Europe and multiple calibers and configurations are needed.
 
I agree with all sides of this conversation, as everyone has points I couldn't help but reflect on as I reviewed this Sauer takedown. I liked plenty of things about it, and disliked plenty too. In the end, I found for me and this is subjective, the double rifle was a better choice. It is roughly the same weight, is roughly the same length, balances better, and takes down every bit as fast. It is however substantially more expensive, and barrels in different chamberings exponentially more expensive for a switch barrel rig. Always trade a off with everything, just a matter of finding where you're interested in gaining and where you're willing to compromise.
 
Thanks for the review, not in the market for a double or a takedown but wanted to say I enjoyed the read as well as your other reviews/stories. A shame about the Wood Bison but good job on your part.

Anybody interested? 3 barrels for sale for the Sauer 202 take down, 375 H&H, .416 R and.458 lott ( new). The first 2 only shot 10 bullets, the 3rd is new. They are hard to sell in Holland cause i shot the last dutch elephant. ;) send me a Personal message if you are interested in one or more of them
