Hunting boar with a spear or knife is an extremly exciting way to hunt wether it is done with the use of bay dogs or through stalking few things get the heart pumping like being that close to the quary of choice. I would highly recomend this sport to anyone who has the chance. Also since feral hogs in the southern US are way over populated and expanding rapidly the areas of oppertunity are expanding as well. This coupled with the hogs relatively poor eyesight and keen sense of smell and hearing create a hunt that is both challenging yet doable. This has been a hobby of mine for several years now and I cannot explain how fun the experience truly is.

I could not be out-done by jnr, and was fortunate enough to have successfully hunted another warthog solo with my spear as well!

Another fearsome and very potent wound channel.
The entry wound is shown as it stood sharp quarterly away from me at +_ 6 m and the spear went forward from there to the throat,but did not penetrate that deep as the other one so as to exit on the other side.
It expired in about 25-30 m.

Wheels,no it's made of a very tough spring steel that get scary sharp with a bit of attention,and does not bend at all.
In my opinion,my observations so far is that when the warthog runs off with this big blade in it,the heavy handle dragging around on the ground result in a lot of secondary internal damage by cutting both ways before it fell out inside of 5- 10 m as opposed to a lighter/smaller spear blade that does not penetrate with such a huge wound channel [at least 4'] or just 'stick' inside the animal.

The internal damage has got to be tremendous when they run.

the time was very short and hectic,[2 weddings in 2 weekends]but i will post some photos on the bow hunting site also of a nice old warthog boar that graced my hunting tree........

On this hunt the joke was on me...[yet again!]

Man you should have seen this spear hunting scene;---just imagine--

Here I'm hiding by laying flat on the ground in the kraal behind this water trough [krip] with my spear, and this little teaser came right-up just on the other side of it, [maybe a meter & 1/2 away?]
Blissfully and totally unaware of me, can you believe that!

[He actually came from the 'wrong' side [wind],but I think that by that time after a couple of hours laying in ambush in a kraal with cows doing their 'thing' quite close and some spots on me as typical uncaring and unconsidered cows tend to do,I really smelled like just another stupid cow to him! lol]

No chance to move though,let alone stood up and throw a spear!



The best that I could do was sticking my hand a bit over the 'krip' and snap a picture of him for a fond memory of ANOTHER one that got away!
At least now I have his face on my police-file!![lol]

[I'm sure there is a real funny story somewhere in there,don't you think?? [lol]

Ahh, I really start to enjoy this new [spear] hunting experiences in my [old]hunting life!
[The success rate per spear hunt is about 5% [if that high!], but the experience and thrill of the close-up stalk , --man, oh man!]

Well, to me it was yet another unforgettable hunting experience, because as always, it's the hunt and not the kill that matters.
