i am planning a to hunt in Africa in the next year are so and i have a 338 win mag and a 458 win mag are these enough?? or should i get something bigger? thanks in advance for the input

Seriously.
An interesting first post.

You use that big one on gators at home?

Welcome to AH, those 2 guns are more than adequate.

Welcome to the forum!
No need to get anything bigger unless you just want to. For your plains game you could even go a bit lighter than the .338, though its a good choice and will cover all plains game easily. You wont need the .458 unless buff or elephant is on the list. The planning is a lot of the fun. Good luck!

Good day and welcome sharkfetching, you will definitely not need anything else.

Depending on what you are going after, you either have it covered or could be a little over gunned with the 458.

the 338 will cover just about everything plains game wise. if going after danger game the 458 has your based covered.

I would opt for 375 H&H unless you going after elephant.

More than enough. Maybe take a 30-06 for daily use and the 458 only for dangerous and big game.

I am plains game hunting in July in RSA and taking two guns - a 7mm and a 270. The 270 is my son's but he's overseas so I'll carying his gun over for him. He and my daughter in law are going to join me for a few days...

i have shot moose and bear when i was in Alaska with both. but just use the 338 since i am back in Florida for wild hog.

my standard Africa line up is .300 win mag and either .416 or .470. Not to start a new topic but I think you will find a .416 or .458 lott superior to a
.458 win mag. unless you are hunting something real big I would stick with you .338

Welcome to AH, Sharkfetching.

I ve done most of my hunting in Africa with a .338WM. Used a .375HH for buff.

That 338 will take any plains game. ( combined with a good bullet)

.375 H&H is min in most places for Dangerous game. So, the 458 will work on DG.

Have fun planning. You have enough gun already in my mind.

the 338 wm loaded with 250g is an excellent choice for most plains game

Welcome to AH hope you find it all on here!! :) those two are a very good combo, and more than adequate..

My best always.

I see mention a few times that the .338 is good for "most" plains game. As Brick says above, its good for "any" plains game, not most. From dik-dik to eland.

that crossed my mind several times to ses, l was wondering which ones needed anything bigger .

I'm not a .338 guy, it just doesn't seem to fill in a hole between my .300WM and .375HH. But no doubt in my mind that there's not a PG species out there it would not be more than adequate on.

Just a quick point, I use 458wm for elephant, I wanted to use it 2 weeks ago on a lion, I tried 5 different guns shops for soft point ammo, non had stock. Used my 375 instead, every shop had 375 stock. This was South Africa.

TMS, not a common phenomena at all not to be able to find 458 ammo is almost unbelievable, but it happens good that you had the trusty 375 on stand by.... As you say you can never go wrong with that bad boy! :)

My best always.

Enjoyed reading your post again. Believe this is the 3rd time. I am scheduled to hunt w/ Legadema in Sep. Really looking forward to it.
