I've taken to using a Harbor Freight non-contact infrared laser thermometer to track barrel temperature. At this point, I have not had it long enough to draw conclusions, but it will track the temperature increase for progressive rounds and at multiple locations on the barrel.
I've been playing with light loads and .410 bullets for a .41 Magnum due to few and far between 300 grain Hornady bullets. Tried the .412 cast bullets from midway and the first on gave me a perfect side on hole at 50 yards so abandoned that route.

From what I understand, the current data is developed using piezo pressure measurements rather than the older copper crusher measurements. This is a more accurate method and has led to reduced maximum powder charges.
