SCI Question
As mentioned in my intro post I've been a shooter all of my life but I am new to the whole hunting thing. I am interested in starting to hunt for trophy animals and was told about SCI from someone on another forum. What are the "Grand Slams" and other awards from SCI? I browsed their website briefly but I'm still lacking the overall idea of Grand Slams, etc. Can anyone explain?

Grand Slams started with North American Sheep
Stone, Dall, Big Horn, Desert
If you got all four you were said to have a "Grand Slam" or "Slam"
Springbok genetic manipulation has created 4 of these to acquire.
Copper, Black, White, (Cape or Kalahari)
Spiral Horn
Nyala, Bushbuck, Eland, Kudu (Cape or Southern)
If you have lots of money you can add the following to that list:
Sititunga, LD Eland, Bongo, Mountain Nyala
"Tiny Ten"
All the miniature antelope
Duiker, Klipi's, etc.
I personally have no idea if SCI has an award for this process of collecting trophies. Maybe someone else can answer.
As far as trophy hunting is concerned:
SCI has three levels of awards Bronze, Silver, Gold
SA has an awards book as well.
Rowland Ward is another record for Trophies of Africa.
Boone and Crockett for North American Big Game
CIC has a set of awards for Europe and African trophies.
If you want to give your PH fits just say you are looking for only Rowland Ward trophies.
These specimens are significantly more rare and you
By the way, if you get Rowland trophies you will make the other record books as well.
Good luck with your trophy hunting.Practice whispering before you leave for Africa!

Thanks for the info, do the slams apply to North American game as well? Turkeys, deer, etc?

As I said the Sheep in NA.
I guess you could add Caribou since there are Four subspecies.
Those Turkeys as well since there are Four of them too.
I have also heard one guy saying he had a North American Slam by hunting the 29 Species of Big Game in NA.
Make up what ever combo you want and call it a slam I guess.
I am working ever so slowly for that African slam.
47 or so Species. Probably more if you start adding subspecies and various countries and then of course birds, cats.
Oh yeah, Bill Fish provide another opportunity. Sails, Swords, Black and Blue Marlin. Then the Tuna.

Actually the Copper, Silver and Gold are the levels of recognition for individual animals. In the SCI slams you can progress through copper, bronze, silver, gold, and diamond levels as well based on the number of animals taken. Here is a link to the SCI 2011 awards issue detailing the miriad of slams and awards available. Although there is quite some controversy about the whole process, I think all can agree that the taking of any slam is quite an accomplishment. Slams start on page 30.

Amen...that is why I am no longer a member of SCI
They do a lot of good but they have turned hunting into a competition between millionaires trying to prove whose package is bigger by the amount of money they can spend collecting "slams" and trying for "Hunter of the Year" awards.

trophies are nice and awards are great,
Competition is a lot about the life we lead
I offer up to the reader a different challenge
Not recognized by SCI
Doesn't take place in Africa
by comparison, reasonably priced
and, if successful, an accomplishment beyond compare
The McNab Challenge
Believe me, it makes for a very full and interesting day"He even took the gramophone on safari. Three rifles, provisions for a month and . . . . Mozart"

I have unwittingly done that one before. On my way in to hunting camp I stopped by the usual fishing hole and caught a couple trout for the pan that night, shot a grouse on the trail in and bumped into a herd of elk before I got to camp and killed a nice bull, all before my hunt was even really supposed to start. Im sure it would have been much harder if I was actually trying.
The journey is the reward.
