Man accidentally shoots airline worker

NEW ORLEANS, July 25 (UPI) -- A United Airlines employee was accidentally shot by a passenger checking a gun Monday at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Louisiana, officials say.

The passenger, Edward Deubler, 65, of Harvey was trying to check a hunting rifle before his morning flight airport when the gun discharged, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported. The bullet hit a counter and a shard of the bullet hit a male employee's leg.

The employee was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Deubler was issued a summons for negligent injury by deputies on the scene.

The Transportation Security Administration says guns are allowed on flights in checked luggage, as long as they are verified during the ticket counter check-in process, unloaded and in a hard-sided, locked container.

"We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident," TSA spokesman Jon Allen said.

I know some may not like to hear it BUT what a jerk! If he can't verify that the weapon is empty before he goes to the airport and then can't be trusted to know enough about the gun or gun handling to not discharge it in the terminal, maybe he should find another hobby. It gives all of us a black eye.

I agree...hunters get the fitting of rednecks as it is!

Years ago while hunting in Alaska, 3 groups of hunters were checking there baggage plus there bows, revolvers rifles.

WE had just hopped a flight from Ege Gik, AK. We were at at the King salmon airport when our plane arrived and deplaned a group of locals and hunters..

All pasengers baggage was on a cart and taken out to the plane we were watching the loading of our bags and horns & capes.

The luggage personnel were throwing bags and rifles into the cargo hold when a loud bang rang out. Well our plane was delayed until the baggage was removed to see what rifle went off and put a hole in the 737.... Police arrived and when the rifle was located...easy to spot with a hole in the end of the case...the hunter and his members were escorted to a conference room for questioning...they were all delayed...

The 737 was inspected and repairs were make and we then flew to Dillingham and on to Anchorage...

The entire party was ticketed and the owner of the rifle was in big trouble....i do not remember what happen to him...i do believe he lost his right and ability to hunt in Alaska..plus a hefty fine and restitution for the 737 repairs.

It's down right careless and negligent to have a loaded firearm.....unless you are in the field hunting or at the gun range shooting. There are too many accidents waiting to happen!

Assume you have no problem with loaded guns in your own home or while legally carrying concealed.

BTW, I see where your Gov. just signed into law a "shall issue" concealed carry law. Sounds similar to what we have here in WA state. Good for him!

I have not too many problems with it. I think a loaded gun is needed in some cases. I am not a huge supporter of concealed carry law. Have no problem with a loaded gun in a house as long as the kids don't have access to it! A lot of times less is more. Most of the public I know...don't want to see guns on the streets or businesses.

And yes, I hate our governor....hated the last one too. I'm neither a Republican or Democrat....there are crooks on both sides of the line. Maybe it's because I've met too many of the politicians in person and find they for the most part utterly distasteful to be kind...if you like slick sales people...you like politicians. Jagged USA citizen.

It wasn't an AD (accidental), it was an ND (negligent).

It isn't exactly rocket science to take the bolt out and put it in the case out of the receiver. You open the case and there are no questions. Saves time at check in.

I've got plenty of loaded weapons in the house or in my holster as the case may be, but the cargo hold of a plane (especially one I'm on) is not the place for it.

I agree 100%. It is idiots and incidents like this that are going to make it impossible to check a rifle on a plane.

I hope everyone likes renting rifles on their hunts thanks to idiots that are not smart enough to empty the chamber...
