Zambia, DEC Arrests Illegal Ivory Trader
THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a businesswoman of Matero Township in Lusaka for illegally selling ivory worth US$80,000.
DEC spokesperson Rosten Chulu, in a statement yesterday, said Catherine Laima Mumba, 35, was arrested with her brother Christopher Laima, 43, who was selling cannabis.
"Ms Mumba of Matero was arrested for possessing ivory equivalent to eight elephants worth US$80,000. She has been handed over to the Zambia Wildlife Authority for further prosecution," Mr Chulu said.
Mr Laima was charged with unlawfully trafficking in narcotics contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
In Eastern Province, the DEC arrested Shadreck Mazyopa, 44, of Chamota Village for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 210 kilogrammes.
Also arrested was Davison Nkhata, 22, of Mphulang'ombe Village in Chief Mwasemphangwe's area in Lundazi district for unlawfully cultivating cannabis weighing 88.4 kilogrammes.
Kawina Phiri, 38, a peasant farmer of Muchilibala Village was also nabbed for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 63.2 kilogrammes.
The commission also arrested Precious Chisenga, 24, a businesswoman of Lusaka's John Laing Towship for trafficking in 150 kilogrammes of cannabis.
Others were Febby Kunda, 40, of Misisi Township for trafficking in 70 kilogrammes of cannabis, Ismail Mutale, 28, of Material Township in Kapiri Mposhi for trafficking in 2.6 grammes of cannabis and Sashi Chama, 23, a salesman of Riverside Township in Kapiri Mposhi for trafficking in 1.36 grammes of cannabis.
All the suspects would appear in court soon.
