New from Pretoria
Hi guys,
I am currently studying in Pretoria. My mother owns a small game ranch in the Thabazimbi district in Limpopo. I guess that says what my holidays are like!
I enjoy picking up my bow and heading to the veld, I'm really trying for the walk and stalk. I also enjoy wingshooting - watefowling, game birds and pigeons (busy training my GSP pup!). Unfortunately I dont own my own rifle just yet. Only a few more months to go!
I love the spiral horns as well as the big game. But all game makes my blood rush! Hopefully in the future I may be able to host some of you at my own lodge and outfitting camp - we all allowed to dream!
I look forward to learning from some of the experienced African hunters!
Thank you guys for an awesome forum.
David

Thanks for the welcome guys!
Spike I'm currently looking around.. Must say a .338 Sabi or 8x64 Brenneke might be up there! Although reloading may be time consuming. In that case a .300WinMag might really suit me. At this time I'm still looking around, listening and learning. A nice medium bore rifle is the way I want to go to start off with, something I can use in the bushveld and if I must on longer ranges as well.

Welcome to AH David! The 300 Win Mag is a good choice and one of my favorite.
Enjoy life now -- it has an expiration date.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted.

Thabazimbi
Hi David. I have just joined today. I am an ex Pretoria Boys High and now live in Napier in the Overberg. Many years ago, I hunted in Thabazimbi and Rustenburg. Just done a gemsbok and springbok hunt in namibia. Would love to do a bushveld hunt again in that area sometime again. Let me know when you are up and running. I am on FB. Good luck with your studies. Regards. Barry

Hi David. Regarding the choice of calibers: You will get 22 different recommendations from 22 hunters. Yes, the 300win Mag is a very good caliber, but I personally would not recommend it easily - certainly not for bushveld shooting. Ideal for Namibia plains game at 200mtr plus. You mention "longer ranges". How long? I would rather opt for a 30-06. Do not be deceived by the "Oh, but you can buy/load seven different bullet weights". A 165g or 180gr does the trick, and stick to one always. I have owned one for 35 odd years. Also, the 30-06 is the benchmark in so far as recoil is concerned. Good ammo is also cheaper. If the bush is thick and your shots are therefore not over 200mtr, then even a .308 is ideal. (It is the most popular caliber for Bisley - incl distances upto 500mtrs). Remember too, that you love bow hunting, so I suspect that most of your shooting game will be done with a bow.
