Hello all, I am new to the site but have been reading up on double rifles for awhile and have tons of questions. I have a itch for a S/S 375. The only thing I've realise so far it you need deep pockets. So for now it still a goal. Any advice out there as to where to start and what to look for?

Is the 375 H&H not made in a double? What's the difference between to two - Flanged/H&H?

Thanks for the info. I checked it out. It a Cogswell & Harrison 375 H&H, I'm told it needs a face lift. It sounds like a good deal. I better learn more about what I'm gettting myself into before I buy anything.

Double rifles are built in the 375 Flanged cartridge and the belted 375 H&H cartridge.

Many if not most double rifle shooters prefer the flanged model (in any caliber btw) due to more reliable extraction of the flanged round. However for many shooters the belted cartridges work just fine.

Thats true. The question are, can you trust a rimless (with belt only) in a life or death situation? Normally you can. But can you get a HH in a eject model, or do it comes only with extractors? I dont know since my economy only allow me to focus on the hunt, not very expensiv weapons.

True, but it might be easier to find an H&H over the flanged, and maybe less expensive.

GAM, welcome to the forum...

I am sure the H&H would be reliable and if at a later time you wanted a flanged 375, (I would assume) that a good gunsmith could re-chamber and work on the extractor. If I am wrong about that, which I may be, there are some smithies on this site that could tell you about that option better than I. Good luck in your search. BTW check on gunbroker.com, I know I have seen some used SxS 375 H&H's on there in the past.

Gam, you should have no problems in a quality modern built double chambered for the H&H.
A freind of mine in Nth Carolina has a gorgeous Chapuis, colour-case-hardened action for sale at the moment for $7500. It is in near new condition and has very nice timber.
(he is clearing his safe of a number of rarely used doubles to fund extra hunting)

What I really need is a simple book on doubles - Doubles for Dummies maybe. I've search the web for help understanding the difference between 375 H&H and 375 Flanged. What I take it's only the cartridge that is different, the Flanges actually ejects the shell while the H&H have extractors - You have to manually remove the spent casings. - Right??? What about availability - can you get either type of bullet and the ballistic the same?

Sounds like you need a book on cartridges and design as well. Cartridges of the World by Barnes is a good place to start. Diff between the H&H and the flanged is simple. H&H is a belted cartridge and the flanged is rimmed. The larger rim is said to be more reliable in double and single shots because the extractor has more to grab than on the belted type case though lots of doubles do just fine with the belted case. It has nothing to do with whether or not you have extractors or ejectors, you can have either but be warned a double with ejectors is quite a lot more expensive than just extractors. Ammo for the two is no contest, the H&H is much more available than the flanged and the flanged is always loaded at least by a factory at lower pressure and velocity than the H&H. Capacity is similar though I think the H&H has a bit more room for powder. This is all sort of general in scope and if I made a mistake somewhere rest assured it will be corrected by someone soon!

Hello folks - after many months of searching and researching and considering $$ I think a conventional bolt action .375 is for me. I have several bolt action rifles and all shoot fine. But, considering I will be hunting not only plains game but dangerous game with this I'm considering have a custom rifle built. Not sure it's worth the extra money and if it's real vaule for dollar. I know there are a lot of quality rifles off the shelf with minor adjustments like a muzzlebreak and a trigger job can make a world of difference.

So what do you think?

Is a custom rifle worth the extra money? Any advise on who makes a quality .375?
IF not, Any advise on a factor rifle?
