In Central America the vast majority of "hunting" for birds will be "pass shooting".

Meaning, you will be standing in one place as the birds approach you and pass by.


If you have Nintendo or access to any type of computer game that has moving birds being shot at involved and practice for the next month you will be a long way ahead.

If you have not handled firearms before look up some hunter safety information.

I trained a young man a while ago on a sporting clays range that had never touched a shotgun before and he shot incredibly well for a beginner. I questioned him and he said he had never shot anything but a simulated duck and pheasant shooting game on the computer or the arcade.

Wii games will let you practice a bit with a simulated "gun".

I would also suggest asking your dad a few more questions in regard to the bird hunting trip he booked for you guys... Find out also if the hunting outfit that you will be hunting with has a website. Further to that find out more about the country of Nicaragua and it's people and google bird hunting in Nicaragua.

He said he booked under Nicaragua Dove Hunting Experience | Bird Hunting Experience, I looked at the website but it seems the site is on maintenance now as this is not the site I looked a few days ago.

Yes we will enjoy every single minute of it. This is our first time that he invite us on in his hunting trips, unlike before that he tell his experiences in a story. I'm really excited to feel the way he feels on his first try.

If I'm not mistaken you are referring to Flor de Caña Rum. They said this already win 72 international medals and one of the best Rum in Central America.

I recall my Dad said the reason why keeps on coming back to Nicaragua is because of the 18 yr old rum called Flor de Cana Centenario Gold. I wonder what is the taste of a rum that is 18yr/old.

Yes, I do play that game bird shooting. But having a shotgun is different than having a joystick.

Thanks for the tips, yes i haven't handled any firearms upto now that's why I find it difficult and I don't want to mess on our vacation on learning how to use a riffle.

i would find a clay club and go for lessons, as trying to learn on the shoot will detract from your enjoyment of it. the game even with a joystick gives you the idea of giving the target lead when you shoot, so not having shot before you will most likely pick it up with the clays under tuition very quickly as you have no previous experience or bad habits. when the instructor is happy with you try shooting sporting clays as much as you can to gain experience of the different shot angles , again with an instructor so they can tell you where your shots are going if you are missing and how to rectify it. always swing through your shot, never stop when you pull the trigger or you will miss. most of your weight is on your front leg using the other to balance, with your feet a shoulders width apart ,and that central line up through your leg and body is your pivot point for swinging the shotgun. with this stance when you go to shoot a high bird going over you front to back you will naturally rock into a stance with your weight just about evenly distributed on both feet, with your body bending backwards from the waist,if you put too much on the back foot you have a good chance of loosing your balance and falling over backwards.......enjoy your trip and easy with the rum!!!!

For over 3 decades, I have been hunting and fishing.

I would learn to shoot clay pigeons with a shotgun, before I went hunting. It would be best to practice with whatever firearm you will be using a pump, semi-auto, over-under, or side by side. I have shot them all but it helps to be familiar with each and how they shoot. It takes a little bit of practice to learn and gauge the speed of the bird and how much lead you have to have on the birds to bring them down. It all varies with distance and how fast they are going.

I think you will have a great time and learn a lot. Hunting should be fun! I wouldn't stress over miss birds, enjoy the new sites and experiences.
