Namibia springbok and oryx cull hunt

The following culling special is for the 2011 season and will feature Gert Van Der Walt as the PH.

Daily rate 1X1 - $430
Daily rate 2X1 - $345

Animals that can be culled include oryx and springbok. The charge will be $80 per oryx and $75 per springbok.
Also, a $75 hunting permit is required.
If 10 days or longer are booked then all oryx that are culled are included in the price.
If the biggest oryx is kept as a trophy then the fee will be $600. If two oryx are kept then the trophy fee of the second will be $300.
If the largest springbok is kept for a trophy the fee is $500, with the second springbok trophy going for $300.
All of the animals are on unfenced properties, including the 3,200 square mile Gaingu conservancy.
Culling can be combined with the backpack hunt that Gert has listed in the past.
Also, other game can be hunted (not culled) for the following prices: kudu ($1,200), Hartman's Zebra ($950), Burchell's Zebra ($950), Warthog ($550), Klipspringer ($900), and Steenbok ($400).

Sounds like a great opportunity to get some shooting in....must admit I love hunting springbok and oryx.

Would a 6.5mm be OK for this hunt, or does one need a 7mm minimum for Namibia regardless of game hunted?

If it was just springbok I would say a 6.5 would be fine. But, an oryx can be tough. So, I would stick with 7mm or bigger.
I'm not sure about the legal requirements though. I tend to be over gunned rather than under. I shot my one and only oryx (thus far) with a .375 Ruger. I will check with Gert for his recommendations.

The regulations say 7mm or bigger for Namibia, people have said on here they have hunted with smaller calibers...but oryx are tough! I would not use anything less than a 7mm Rem. Mag....I actually think the 7mm Rem Mag...doesn't kick too bad.

I agree. I think the 7-mag would work great on the open plains. I'm toying with the idea of bringing my FN Mauser .300 Weatherby Mag in 2012.

The 7mm story is a reccommendation that every one now quote as law. The actual law is minimum 2700 J or roughly 2000 ft lbs muzzle enery for oryx, with no caliber restriction. Springbok is half that.

Thanks Karl, according to my calculations that equals 1991.417 ft lbs. So that means a 243 Win 95 gr. XP3 or 95 gr. Ballistic tip from the Winchester ammo line is essentially the bare minimum.

Karl - Thanks for the clarification.

However, I've heard internet chatter about folks having rifles of less than 7mm confiscated in Namibia. It was part of these folks' warnings to make sure you take something 7mm or above if you want to hunt in that country. Are these stories untrue?
