And very beautiful. In Germany, capercaille is consider big game and in Romania we say that you are not a true hunter till you shoot a capercaille and a chamois. Unfortunatelly starting this year romanian hunters are not allowed to hunt this magnificent birds. Here some picture more relavant I hope:

They are truly beautiful! And I could see why a hunter would very much want to hunt one. And for me it would have to be a full mount in the taxidermy room. Thanks for sharing and educating me on this great bird!

They look like a monster version of our Blue Grouse. 20Km in the kind of terrain in that photo would be like sheep hunting.
Sad that there are not enough birds to have an open season for Romanians.
I can certainly see why it is considered a prize.

Sir,
this hunt used to be even more difficult than chamois hunt, it was made in spring and snow in some years may have up to one meter, still partially frozen but not to support the weight of a hunter. Sometimes we climb all night to reach the mountaintop at dawn. Then stalking the capercaillie in the rhythm of the song. During song, the cock can not see or hear anything. But it is not continuous song. 1-2 seconds of song and then silence, then 1-2 seconds of song and silence. You can only move during the song. Not to mention that females do not sing but listen.
This hunt was closed because of european directive not to hunt in the spring, not because there are not enough birds.
Very sad, it was a beautiful hunt.George Dina
