That's awesome, they seem very docile laying next to the hunter. I want to harvest a few myself.

The bad thing about baboons, they usually have a high position compared to you. Military strategy thrown right out the window!

Default Chacma Baboon Physical Description from Wikipedia

The chacma baboon (Papio ursinus), also known as the Cape baboon, is, like all other baboons, from the Old World monkey family. It is one of the largest of all monkeys.

    Physical description
Chacma baboon is perhaps the longest species of monkey, with a male body length of 50?15 cm (20?5 in) and tail length of 45?4 cm (18?3 in). It also one of the heaviest; the male weighs from 21 to 45 kg (46 to 99 lb). Baboons are sexually dimorphic, and females are considerably smaller than males. The female chacma weighs from 12 to 25 kg (26 to 55 lb). It is similar in size to the olive baboon and of similar weight to the more compact mandrill, which is usually crowned the largest of all monkeys. The chacma baboon is generally dark brown to gray in color, with a patch of rough hair on the nape of its neck. Unlike the males of northern baboon species (the Guinea, hamadryas, and olive baboons), chacma males do not have a mane. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this baboon is its long, downward-sloping face. The canine teeth of male chacma baboons have a mean length of 3.86 +/- 0.30 cm at the time they emigrate from their natal troop. This is the time of greatest tooth length as the teeth tend to wear or be broken thereafter.

The three subspecies are differentiated by size and color. The Cape chacma is a large, heavy, dark-brown, and has black feet. The gray-footed chacma is slightly smaller than the Cape chacma, lighter in color and build, and has gray feet. The Ruacana chacma generally appears to be a smaller, less darkly colored version of the Cape chacma.

Wikipedia says large males weigh 45kg. This thing looks alot heavier than that to me. I am curious. Would some of you PH's from southern africa be willing to give out estimates on this?

I shot one in 1990 in the Okavango. My PH had a client before me that wanted one but didnt connect, so he asked me to pop one for him and I did. Wasnt something I really wanted for myself. Never had any desire to shoot another one. There were quite a few on the rocks behind the camp in Zim with Touch Africa last trip. My PH said, "Oh no, they must f**k off, they must not be there!"

    some excellent photo's there jerome
and that dog baboon is HUGE!
[the boys and their toys.... ]

this is a blind that we put up for warthog and baboons, but it did not work for the baboons at all!
though it's a good blind,i think it was still too 'new' [only 2- 3 days old] and the baboons were by far too canny and suspicious to fall for this one.

[Jerome,if you would bear with me i would like to put up one of my stories on this tread about a baboon hunt and hide that did work for us?]
