I remember watch some Arboreal monkey in the East Cape but the second I raised my gun to look at them through the scope they were gone, they knew the game.

Phil, I'm only wierded out by how smart the little devils are. The baboons we saw in the East Cape kept a snipers distance from us, they would be making noise on any stalk from a long distance.

oh yes, i agree with you enysse they are razor sharp out in the wild
and shots at these distances on my photo's would be very rare out in the deep wild!
[well, you'll never know, sometimes 'hunters luck' is with you..]

    happy hunting!

[did you know that back in the day some army unit's snipers could only finally 'graduate' after months of training by planning and then laying in cammo ambush hiding for hours and then 'snipe' a baboon in the real wild ?]
to have the final test be the sniping of a baboon says something about them....

forget about the Walt Disney image of baboons.....
they are more often than not vicious hunters in their own right when the opportunity presents itself!

    not for sensitive viewers

I haven't hunted them enough...damn the luck, but I agree with you Willem, sniping baboon is a real skill and sneaking up to them from a distance is a real challenge. I think people luck into them because they are in the right place at the right time and the baboon doesn't know they are there. Baboons are very cunning!!! I know a lot of guys that have hunted Africa and would LOVE to shoot a few!

There is picture floating around the web, where a guy mounted a bus filled with baboons...it's pretty funny!

Baboons were raiding a garden. A kid came and got us to try to shoot them. When we showed up we could hear the baboons leaving. There was a chicken with 90% of its feathers plucked out. We asked about the chicken. The farmer said that a bull baboon grabbed the chicken, climbed a tree and just started pulling out the feathers to hear it squawk. He said that it made no effort to eat it. When we showed up the baboon dropped the chicken and ran off. It was an interesting sight watching a naked chicken running around. The farmer didn't have to pluck his dinner that night.

It seems baboons can be cruel for the fun of it.

I am convinced that baboons can tell the difference between a gun and a broomstick. If they have been shot at and see you with a gun they are gone. If you try to get them out of a garden and don't have a gun but point a broom stick at the same troop of baboons they will stay 30 yards away and keep stealing the produce.

Wheels, I agree with you, baboons that have been hunted know the difference between a stick and a gun. I think even the smaller monkeys do!

I agree. Monkeys are smart too. When I was a kid I would try to run the vervets out of the garden with a slingshot. When I was 8 or 9 I was bit twice. Dad let me take the shotgun out the next day. After shooting two they treated me a little nicer. After that I would just walk out and yell at them and they would run off. They new the difference between me and my brothers. My brothers couldn't run them off for anything.
