Johnny (land donor), Charl (quantity surveyor), Phillip (architect), Johan & Charl (builders), Pierre (earth moving equipment), Cobus (Chairman of Pathways Residence) are just a few of the "mighty men" that have contributed their efforts to this fantastic project.
Pathways-Pretoria, a non-profit organisation, is a centre catering for learners with special needs. Pathways Residence was established with the sole aim of providing independent accommodation for the young adults who attend Pathways. Parents and caregivers have come together to represent these young adults who are all ready to spread their wings.
Consequently a house, with a safe and supported semi-independent living arrangement, became a great need! At present there are seven young adults who have left the nest. The house is run by a caregiver, who will be there to facilitate the household. The young adults cook and clean for themselves, except for those who are not capable of doing so. Support workers will provide the special care that is needed.
The house has eight rooms; one for each of the young adults and one for the caregiver. We were donated a one hectare (2.2 acre) piece of land which enabled us to build a house that now accommodates the various special needs of these Young Adults.
The residents are transported to and from the Studio and Work by a specially equipped bus donated by one of our sponsers.
While this stage of the dream has been fulfilled we do not stop here. Our greater dream is to help young adults with special needs leave their respective nests. The reality is that the committed parents and caregivers will not be here forever. What happens to their vulnerable children when they are no longer here to advocate for them?
Hopefully in the future, with your help, we could empower many more special young adults who dream just as we do of independence.
