Neices 1st Moose
Well, my 13 YO neice just shot her 1st moose the other day, hunted the hard way, on foot in a horseback only wilderness area. I was fortunate enough to be there to help her. The well above average temps sure put a damper on the rutting activity and despite hopes of a rut crazed bull tearing up the country and grunting with every step up to point blank she has still never even heard a moose call. The bull slipped in silently to my call and just appeared at 60yds. 2 shots 2 animals so far for this budding hunter!

First, congratulations to your niece.
Second, this post is great that it has a pic, but inadequate in that you didn't say where the hunt took place, or what caliber was used (so we could debate the choice of bullets), or the rifle manufacturer.

LOL I knew I forgot something... the controversy!
I am sure Bart will shudder as i write this but it was shot with a .243 with 100gr partitions. Her dad backed her up after she shot but the little .243 did a good job and, although way undergunned for moose, would have quickly killed him with no help from the .308. She is shy to shoot anything bigger than her .243 we were not taking any chances. I am not argueing since he dropped in a perfect spot that we could ride the horses to with no issues (read no packing!) LOLThe journey is the reward.

Thankd Bob
Gotta love a good moose steak. Mmmmm Moose steak, how can you tell I am writing this while waiting for supper. LOL
This bull hardly had any odor to him at all, almost no evidence that he was taken in the middle of the rut. I am sure he will be very tender and nice, we have taken some at this time of year that were harder to chew than my hunting boots! The journey is the reward.

Make sure you rinse the sun tan lotion off the Moose it spoils the meat.

Thanks, I have very little experience with the .243. So far She has had a pass through at 125yds at a 200# Whitetail and this shot at 60yds broke a couple ribs and stopped under the skin, I wouldnt want to test it out on a big leg bone or shoulder blade but behind the leg works just fine.
The journey is the reward.
